We have over 500 animals in our care at any given time, including Donkeys, Pigs, Chickens, Rabbits, Geese, Goats, Dogs & Cats. Woodrock Animal Rescue was founded in 1992 by Nicholas and Estelle (Stella) Meldau, whose focus, passion and drive afforded their animal rescue vision to become a reality. The rescue centre originated in the suburban area of Woodmead and Khyber Rock, hence the name Woodroc

k. Today Woodrock Animal Rescue is one of the oldest independent domestic animal rescue centres in South Africa. We are a registered non-profit, pro-life, rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing shelter, based on 8.5 hectares in the beautiful Hennops River Valley, 25 minutes from Fourways Johannesburg on the R511 Hartbeespoort Road. We offer support to unfortunate animals that are homeless, abused, neglected, stray, injured, ill, geriatric, or unwanted—those who would otherwise face miserable lives and untimely deaths. Being in rescue is a commitment to each and every animal. It’s not for today; it’s forever.

Yes, rescue is hard. It is filled with uncertainty, and at times it can be frightening because when you make a decision on behalf of an animal, they are entrusting you with their life.

But, no matter what life looks like, we should always be there for them.

Yes, every rescue organisation faces its own challenges. That is why, when you take responsibility for an animal and something unexpected happens, don’t pass that responsibility on to another organisation. Face your own battles and honour your commitment.

Animals are not a short-term responsibility. And, when you take on an animal and become its voice, this is a promise for life.

These two incredible souls are still holding onto hope that their forever family is out there.

Blue has every reason not to trust after her ears were cruelly cut, yet she still chooses love: drawn to people, gentle, and endlessly affectionate.

Ty is a sweet, sensitive boy. He may be a little shy at first, but give him the time to trust you, and he’ll become your most loyal companion.

Both are waiting for someone who can look beyond their past and see the love they still have to give.

This is not only a set of pictures of a happy dog who has found her second chance; this is a message to all of us that there can be light at the end of the darkest days.

Dixi spent way too long at Woodrock.
Surrendered when her previous owner was no longer able to give her the care she needed, Dixi became more than only one of our Woodrock dogs - she was a part of the clinic family.

If you ever found yourself popping into our clinic, chances are you’d find her there.
Yes, for six months she was a fixture of our medical centre.

She saw the busy days, the difficult moments, and the endless love that goes into every animal who walks through our doors.

Then last year, she finally found her forever family, and this is what rescue is all about.
Seeing her loved and spoiled is a reminder of the importance of rescue.

Happy tails, sweet Dixi. You will always be part of the Woodrock family.

Emma, a four-year-old girl mixed breed girl, as an energetic, playful girl whose life turned around when her family could no longer keep her. Sky, who had been at Woodrock for nearly a year, is shy girl who blossoms into a love bug once you get to know her.
