We have over 500 animals in our care at any given time, including Donkeys, Pigs, Chickens, Rabbits, Geese, Goats, Dogs & Cats. Woodrock Animal Rescue was founded in 1992 by Nicholas and Estelle (Stella) Meldau, whose focus, passion and drive afforded their animal rescue vision to become a reality. The rescue centre originated in the suburban area of Woodmead and Khyber Rock, hence the name Woodroc

We are a registered non-profit, pro-life, rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing shelter, based on 8.5 hectares in the beautiful Hennops River Valley, 25 minutes from Fourways Johannesburg on the R511 Hartbeespoort Road. We offer support to unfortunate animals that are homeless, abused, neglected, stray, injured, ill, geriatric, or unwanted—those who would otherwise face miserable lives and untimely deaths. Our rescues are beginning their new chapter with families who have given them the sweet promise of forever.

Every second they’ve spent begging to be seen and cherished has led to these picture-perfect moments. From now on, they will be embraced by families who will recognise the pitter-patter of their paws, spoil them with their favourite treats and leave ample space in their beds for them. Max and Ariella want to spend the rest of their lives in a home that will accept them as a pair.

These two fur babies have spent their entire lives enjoying each other’s presence in a home that was meant to be theirs forever. Sadly, just before their ninth birthday, their family surrendered them to Woodrock because they were moving to a place that wasn’t pet-friendly.

We give them the best care a dog in a shelter could ask for, but the warmth of constant companionship is what they truly need. At this point in their lives, they should be snuggled up on a sofa amongst people who will love and spoil them like royalty.

It’s not easy for any dog to enter a rescue centre, but younger dogs have a better chance of being adopted. For an older dog, however, not only is life in shelter stressful, their chances of finding a home are extremely low.

At Woodrock Animal Rescue, we try our best to offer all animals who come through our doors a comfortable environment to settle. But, no matter how much we try, the commotion and constant movement of a rescue centre can never replace the calm that a senior dog experiences in a home.

When they arrive, they spend their first few days, sometimes weeks, pacing, isolating themselves and refusing to eat. Their pain not only lies in being left behind, but also possibly never being able to leave a shelter where most families arrive looking for puppies.

If you ever find your circumstances changing to the point where you can longer care for your animals, please be fair and plan ahead for them to make sure they never have to experience the pain of living in a shelter

Age is just a number that doesn't tell you a dog's story or show you their capacity for love.
