We have over 500 animals in our care at any given time, including Donkeys, Pigs, Chickens, Rabbits, Geese, Goats, Dogs & Cats. Woodrock Animal Rescue was founded in 1992 by Nicholas and Estelle (Stella) Meldau, whose focus, passion and drive afforded their animal rescue vision to become a reality. The rescue centre originated in the suburban area of Woodmead and Khyber Rock, hence the name Woodrock. Today Woodrock Animal Rescue is one of the oldest independent domestic animal rescue centres in South Africa. We are a registered non-profit, pro-life, rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing shelter, based on 8.5 hectares in the beautiful Hennops River Valley, 25 minutes from Fourways Johannesburg on the R511 Hartbeespoort Road. We offer support to unfortunate animals that are homeless, abused, neglected, stray, injured, ill, geriatric, or unwanted—those who would otherwise face miserable lives and untimely deaths. Woodrock Animal Rescue is a registered Non – Profit Organisation (103-156 NPO) and Public Benefits Organisation. Contact Us:

Co-founders Estelle and Nicholas Meldau have made their home a permanent sanctuary for senior dogs, choosing to care for the very animals who are so often overlooked by shelter visitors. In all their years of rescue work, Estelle and Nicholas have never surrendered a dog back to the rescue. Regardless of adjustment phases or challenges, once a dog enters their home, it is their home permanently for the rest of their days.

Life in the Meldau household revolves around order, structure, and daily routine. Just like children, dogs desire routine to feel confident and secure. By keeping a regular schedule where every dog knows what is coming next, Estelle and Nicholas create a calm, structured space where senior pets can comfortably enjoy their golden years.

Senior dogs offer unmatched loyalty, quiet affection, and gratitude. They offer just as much love, if not more, than a puppy. Please, guys, consider adopting a senior dog today.

Elio, Elvis, and Ebbie, our sweet E-litter puppies, have waited long enough to find their forever homes. Tracy, a dedicated inspector, rescued these three brothers from the community of Olievenhoutbosch, and they have been waiting so patiently under our care at Woodrock Animal Rescue ever since.

It has been heartbreaking to watch as all the puppies who arrived alongside them found their families, and even more difficult seeing all the puppies who arrived after them go home, while these three continue to wait.

Now four months old, Elio, Elvis, and Ebbie are at the perfect age to join a loving home and bond deeply with a family. Seeing their kennel grow quiet as other puppies leave is tough, but we know their special people are out there somewhere.

If you can find it in your heart to welcome any of these boys into your home, contact our adoptions team today.

Pluto has shown significant improvement after he was found ill and helpless on the side of the road. He had a severe case of biliary and was literally at death’s door when he was transported to our clinic. For a growing puppy, biliary can be fatal and swift treatment is vital.

Thankfully, Pluto has fully recovered after completing all his treatments. He moved on to our medical bungalows as we continued to work tirelessly to find him his forever home. Because of all our hard work, your sponsorships and donations, his future looks incredibly bright. Stay glued to our socials for an exciting update about our beautiful boy Pluto.

During our regular outreach drives, owners arrive seeking basic medical assistance, receiving rabies vaccinations, deworming, and tick and flea treatments for their pets. Crucially, these drives also allow our team to register dozens of dogs for sterilisation procedures. At our last outreach drive in Olievenhoutbosch, we signed up 70 dogs for sterilisations.

Sterilisation plays a fundamental role in addressing the root causes of overpopulation and neglect. Beyond controlling population numbers, it lowers the risk of severe reproductive cancers, reduces aggression, and protects dogs from roaming into dangerous situations.

Our outreach work matters because it shifts the focus from emergency response to sustainable impact. Treating a sick dog provides immediate aid, but sterilising that same dog protects future generations. This long-term approach transforms community health, reduces animal hardship, and builds a far more compassionate future.
