Our team conducted a search in Roasbank today. Evidence suggests the missing cat is in the immediate vicinity and maintaining a lead of a few meters. The owners have been advised to begin canvassing the area.

🐾 Moving House With a Cat? Please Read This First. 🐾

One of the saddest calls we receive at Zac Tracking is from owners whose cat has gone missing shortly after moving to a new home.

In many of these cases, the cat isn't being naughty, stubborn, or trying to run away.

They're simply trying to get home.

Unfortunately, their idea of "home" is often the place they've known for months or years, not the new house they've only just arrived at.

💔 We've attended numerous cases where a cat was allowed outside too soon after a move and subsequently disappeared.

Some are found.

Some travel surprisingly long distances.

Some are never located.

The good news is that many of these incidents can be prevented.

🏡 Before You Let Your Cat Outside

✅ Keep your cat indoors for at least 2-4 weeks after moving.

The longer the cat is kept safely inside, the stronger its bond becomes with the new home, new smells, and new routine.

🐾 Create a Safe Room

For the first few days, set up a quiet room with:

Food and water
Litter tray
Bed and blankets
Familiar toys
Places to hide

Moving house is stressful, and cats cope best when they have a safe space of their own.

🧸 Bring Familiar Scents

Cats recognise their world through scent.

Keep familiar bedding, blankets, scratching posts, and toys around them during the transition.

🚪 Introduce the Outdoors Slowly

When the time does come:

✅ Start with supervised outdoor time.

✅ Use a harness if your cat is comfortable with one.

✅ Accompany them while they explore.

✅ Allow them to return indoors whenever they choose.

Don't simply open the door and assume they'll know where they live.

🍽️ Feed Before Outdoor Time

A hungry cat is more likely to wander in search of resources.

Allow exploration after meals rather than before.

⚠️ The First Few Weeks Matter

The highest-risk period is often the first few days and weeks after a move.

Cats that become frightened by:

Dogs
Thunderstorms
Construction noise
Vehicles
Unfamiliar surroundings

may attempt to return to their previous territory or hide in places that make them extremely difficult to locate.

❤️ Give Them Time

Your cat has lost everything familiar:

Their territory
Their routine
Their landmarks
Their scent map

Give them the opportunity to build a new one.

A few weeks of patience can prevent months of heartbreak.

🐾 My Pet Is Missing! What Should I Do While Waiting for a K9 Team? 🐾

The first few hours after a pet goes missing are often the most important.

It's completely natural to feel overwhelmed, frightened, and unsure what to do next. While waiting for a K9 tracking team to arrive, there are several important steps you can take that may significantly improve the chances of locating your beloved companion.

🐾 1. Secure a Scent Article

One of the most important things you can do is preserve an uncontaminated scent article for the tracking dogs.

Good examples include:

✅ Bedding used only by the pet

✅ A blanket from their usual sleeping spot

✅ A brush with fur on it

✅ A favourite toy

✅ A harness or collar recently worn

Avoid handling the item unnecessarily and place it in a clean plastic bag or container if possible.

📍 2. Identify the Last Known Location

Make a note of:

The exact place your pet was last seen.
The approximate time.
Any unusual events that occurred nearby.

The more accurate this information is, the better equipped a K9 team will be to assess the situation.

Don't wait.

🚶 4. Speak to Your Neighbours

Social media helps.

Personal conversations help even more.

Go door-to-door and speak directly with neighbours.

Ask them to check:

✅ Garages

✅ Sheds

✅ Storerooms

✅ Roof spaces

✅ Under decks

✅ Under vehicles

✅ Enclosed gardens

Many missing pets are located because a neighbour noticed something unusual in an area they had not previously checked.

🎵 5. Walk the Area Calmly

If your pet is nearby, they may be frightened, confused, or hiding.

Walk the area calmly while talking in your normal voice.

Use familiar phrases they hear every day.

Mention their name naturally.

Avoid shouting.

Avoid creating panic.

A frightened animal is often more likely to respond to familiar sounds than loud calls.

Some owners have even had success playing familiar sounds from home, such as a ringtone, whistle, feeding cue, or other routine sounds associated with comfort and normality.

🌙 6. Search During Quiet Times

Lost pets frequently become more active when the environment is calm.

Early mornings and evenings can be excellent times to:

🐾 Listen carefully

🐾 Look under cover

🐾 Watch for movement

A pet that remains hidden during the day may feel more confident moving after dark.

❤️ 7. Don't Assume They're Far Away

Many missing pets are found surprisingly close to home.

Frightened cats especially may hide in very small spaces for extended periods.

Continue checking:

Garages
Storerooms
Drains
Sheds
Bushes
Crawl spaces
Roof cavities

Never assume an area has already been searched thoroughly enough.

🐾 When a Pet Goes Missing, Every Clue Matters 🐾

One of the biggest misconceptions about K9 tracking is that the dogs either find the pet... or they don't.

In reality, every deployment is an investigation, and our objective is to gather information that helps us understand what happened after a pet disappeared.

When owners call us, they're often desperate for answers:

💔 Which way did my pet go?

💔 Are they still nearby?

💔 Are we searching in the right place?

💔 Do we still have a chance of finding them?

This is where trained tracking dogs can help.

At Zac Tracking, our dogs work from a known scent source and begin piecing together the story left behind by a missing pet.

Sometimes that story leads directly to a happy reunion.

🐾 The trail takes us straight to the pet.

🐾 We locate an overnight nesting site or shelter area.

🐾 We find a frightened pet trapped in a garage, shed, storeroom, drain, roof space, or other structure.

🐾 We identify a route of travel that helps focus search efforts.

But sometimes the most valuable information comes from what the dogs don't find.

Our dogs may indicate that a scent trail ends abruptly or that the scent presence we would expect in a particular area simply isn't there.

This is known as a Negative Scent Indication (NSI).

An NSI is not a failed search.

An NSI is information.

It can suggest that a pet moved away from the area very early, that it never entered a particular search area, or that circumstances prevented a normal ground scent trail from developing.

In some cases, frightened pets, particularly cats, seek shelter under parked vehicles, inside wheel wells, or even inside engine compartments during bad weather or when looking for safety.

Unfortunately, this can sometimes result in them being unknowingly transported to another location when the vehicle moves. In other cases, a well-meaning member of the public may pick up a pet and drive away with it. When this happens, the scent trail can appear to end suddenly because the pet is no longer travelling on the ground under its own power.

That information is incredibly important because it helps owners and search teams adjust their strategy and consider possibilities they may never have thought of.

Every track tells us something.

Sometimes we find the pet.

Sometimes we identify where they've been.

Sometimes we learn where they haven't been.

And sometimes we uncover information that changes the entire direction of the search.

Behind every deployment is a family missing a beloved companion.
