WORDS, LOTS OF WORDS!

We have lots of words and sometimes we tend to throw them at our dogs without a behavior attached. So, then these words have little meaning to our dogs and they may ignore them because they are confused or unclear.

That's why I love to teach a behavior and then give it a name. The behavior is already strong and it's easy to add a word while the dog is doing the behavior.

Here is an example of this. He is predictably getting back on the bed every time he is released. So the behavior is in place and ready to have a cue/command added.

Exposure training (socialization):

Take your puppies out and let them look at everything from a distance. Then there is no pressure to interact with people or other dogs. Let them experience environments at their own pace. It will pay off!

The start of teaching distance from food. This doesn't have a word to it, but you could add "leave it" once the behavior is solid.

I love to start this with puppies! It's a great foundation behavior that has many applications. And it's fun to teach!

This is such a great explanation of why you add distance when a dog is concerned about something in the environment. It is not avoidance, it is teaching our dogs that we will keep them safe and help them through difficult situations. At the same time we can be building skills around these situations.

If your dog spots something worrying on a walk — another dog, a stranger, a bin lorry — the instinct is often to try to encourage them to keep going, hold the lead steady, and hope they'll settle as it passes.

Try this instead: the moment you notice your dog notice the trigger, calmly turn around and walk the other way. No drama, no yanking the lead, no big reaction from you. Just a simple change of direction.

Why it works:

It creates distance between your dog and the thing worrying them before they feel the need to react.

It removes the pressure of "wait and see if they cope"

Over time, your dog learns that when something feels like too much, you'll help — they don't have to handle it alone, and they don't have to escalate to be heard

This isn't about avoiding the world. It's about not asking your dog to prove they can cope with something before they're ready. Small, early exits like this build trust — and a dog who trusts you to step in early is a dog who doesn't need to bark, lunge, or freeze to get your help.

Try it once this week. You might be surprised how much calmer the walk feels.
