Heads up, Zoomies Dog Social Club & Training fam! 🐾 We'll be CLOSED on Friday, July 4th through Sunday, July 6th so our team (and their pups!) can enjoy the holiday safely.
We know fireworks can be scary for our furry friends. Here are some tips to help keep your dog calm and safe:
Create a safe haven: Set up a quiet, comfortable space (like a crate covered with a blanket, or an interior room) where your dog can retreat from the noise and light. My dog prefers the bathtub with his dog bed. I keep the sliding door open slightly so he can exit when he wants comfort from me.
Mask the sounds: Play calming music (there are even dog-specific playlists!), turn on a fan, or use a white noise machine to help muffle the booms. I've found a rain in the forest white noise channel on my and play that until the booms subside.
Tire them out early: A long walk or active playtime before the fireworks start can help them be more relaxed.
Stay calm yourself: Our dogs pick up on our emotions! They can smell your anxiety! Your calm demeanor can help reassure them.
Provide distractions: Offer a high-value chew, a treat-filled puzzle toy, or a lick mat to keep them happily occupied. A cardboard box with paper and treats inside can provide sniffing fun and keep them mentally problem solving all night.
Update ID: Make sure your dog's tags and microchip info are up-to-date, just in case they get spooked and try to escape. This is the weekend when humane societies and local animal control see more strays than any other time of the year.
Talk to your vet: If your dog has severe anxiety, consult your veterinarian about options like calming aids or medication.
Wishing you and your pups a safe and happy Fourth of July! We'll see you back at Zoomies on Monday! 🐶❤️
