Stenotic Nares Surgery: Supporting Easier Breathing in Pets

At our veterinary hospital, we frequently care for brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds, like Derp pictured in the photos below, that have narrowed nostrils, known as stenotic nares. This condition can restrict airflow and make breathing more challenging, particularly during activity, warm weather, or periods of excitement.

What is the surgery?
Stenotic nares correction is a straightforward procedure that gently enlarges the nostrils to improve airflow and make breathing easier.

Breeds commonly affected:
• Bulldogs (English & French)
• Pugs
• Boston Terriers
• Shih Tzus
• Boxers

Best age for evaluation/surgery:
Many pets are evaluated when young—typically between 6 months and 2 years of age, often during routine procedures like spay or neuter or once breathing concerns are noticed.
