🌈Today, on Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day, we pause to honor the beloved pets who’ve crossed the bridge. Though they may no longer be by our side, they’ll forever live in our hearts. 💕

Here are just a few of our pets that we are remembering today.

✨🐾 Happy National Pomeranian Day! 🐾✨

These fluffy little clouds might be small in size, but they’ve got BIG personalities (and even bigger hairdos 💁‍♀️). Whether they’re strutting their stuff, cuddling up, or ruling the household like royalty, Poms always know how to steal the spotlight. 👑🐶

Drop a photo of your Pomeranian in the comments! This is Sophia who comes to work with her mom at the clinic daily! She is an A+ supervisor!

🐈‍⬛ Black Cat Appreciation Day is more than a feel-good holiday — it’s also a reminder of a persistent challenge in animal welfare.

Research confirms that black cats face two significant disadvantages in shelters:
• Lower adoption rates
• Higher euthanasia rates

This “Black Cat Bias” (and broader “Dark Cat Syndrome”) has cultural roots — from centuries-old superstitions to subtle visual preferences — and it can affect how quickly cats find homes. In some cases, it even impacts the veterinary care they receive after adoption.

Our Trends article dives into Robert Carini’s study of nearly 8,000 cats in an urban Kentucky shelter and explores ways to counteract this bias, from better photography to reframing public perception.

Today’s the perfect day to challenge myths and celebrate black cats for what they truly are: loving, unique, and deserving of excellent care.

Important notice for dog owners! 🚨 We've received an increased number of reports in recent weeks of sick or disoriented coyotes within residential neighborhoods, parks and green spaces.

Laboratory testing confirmed the diagnosis of canine distemper, a highly contagious and often fatal viral disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems of both domestic and wild animals, primarily canids.

So how can you protect your pets?

🐕 Keep pets up-to-date on vaccinations
🐕 Avoid feeding or handling wildlife
🐕 Supervise pets outdoors, especially near areas with wildlife

When we say we understand what you are going through, we do. When we say we know it's one of the hardest decisions you'll ever make as a pet parent, we mean it. When we cry along side you, its because we've personally been in your shoes and we are grieving with you. We are all pet parents in our hospital. Today we said goodbye to one of our own. He name is Vincent, a handsome one earred treasure. He had the most amazing day fill with family, friends, a fire truck, and every type of forbidden food! He sent us the most beautiful sunset to let us know that he's ok. We already miss him. Please keep his parents in your thoughts during this difficult time. 🌈

Heartworm disease is serious, but preventable! Transmitted by mosquitoes, these worms can live in your pet’s heart and lungs, causing lasting damage and even death if left untreated.

While heartworms are not as prevalent here as other areas, its still here. Dr Hasler's own dog, Olly, became heartworm positive in Arizona during a lapse in heartworm prevention while she was getting ready to move to Washington for vet school. Dr Hasler and Olly will tell you, heartworm treatment is hard (and expensive!). Olly underwent heartworm treatment in 2018 and has made a full recovery and she's been on year round heartworm prevent since to prevent reinfection.

Protect your pet—schedule a heartworm test and ask us about prevention today.

July 5th is typically the busiest day for animal shelters. Pets can become scared and disoriented from the fireworks and escape the yard or bolt out of the house. Collars and tags can fall off but microchips provide permanent identification. This way if your furry friend does end up going missing, they can be reunited with you quicker!

PARVO ALERT: Today we saw two parvo positive pups Arizona West Veterinary Clinic.

Canine Parvovirus is a highly contagious, often deadly disease that primarily affects puppies and unvaccinated dogs — and it’s especially common in warm climates like Yuma.

It spreads easily through contaminated f***s, soil, even your shoes and it can survive for months in the environment.
The GOOD news? Parvo is preventable with proper vaccination!

Why have your dog vaccinated by a veterinarian?
✔️ Accurate storage & administration to ensure full vaccine potency
✔️ Manufacturer guarantees only apply when vaccines are given by a licensed veterinarian
✔️ Customized vaccine schedules based on your dog’s unique needs
✔️ Medical support if your pet has a reaction
🔍 Did you know?
If your pet contracts parvo despite being properly vaccinated by a vet, many vaccine manufacturers will help cover treatment costs — but only if the vaccine was administered under veterinary care.
Plus, vaccinated dogs who do get sick typically experience milder symptoms and better recovery outcomes.
Don’t take a chance on Parvo. Protect your pup with expert veterinary care at Arizona West Veterinary Clinic.
📅 Schedule your dog’s vaccines today — call us at (928) 344-5919 or visit azwestvet.com.

Our Story

We are a multi provider, full service, small animal practice, meaning we only treat Dogs and Cats but have capabilities of treating most common illnesses and injuries. We are available by appointment only and are open every other Saturday. Emergency and after-hour services are available to established Clients only. We recommend all residents, and visitors to the area, to establish a relationship with a local Veterinarian as soon as you get into the area as there is no emergency hospital within a 180 miles radius and you must be established to receive services at any of the local Veterinary Clinics.
