Meet Mittens – Our Sweet, Slightly Shy Superstar!

Looking for a well-mannered, treat-taking, doggy playgroup graduate to add to your life?
Say hello to Mittens!
This lovely lady is as submissive, gentle, and affectionate as they come. Once she realizes you’re a friend (which doesn’t take long!), she’ll happily smother you in kisses, lean into your love, and do her best to curl up right in your lap—no matter the size mismatch. Mittens takes treats like a perfect lady (no food aggression here!), and she handled all of her vetting and meet-and-greets like a total pro.

In playgroup, Mittens entered with a muzzle just to be extra safe (a common practice for new introductions), and she quickly showed us she knows how to mind her manners. She played nicely with both puppies and adult dogs and handled corrections with grace. Once she proved she could hang with the crew, off came the muzzle—and she kept on impressing us!

Mittens has shown she could share a home with another dog—with proper introductions, of course!

Affection Level: Off the Charts
Trick Skills: Professional Grade
Lap Dog Status: Absolutely (even if she doesn’t quite fit!)

Why We Love Mittens:
Walks beautifully on a leash (may pull a bit when she’s excited—she’s working on it!)
LOVES affection—pets, snuggles, belly rubs? Yes, please!
Super smart: Knows sit, down, paw, wait, and roll over!
Takes treats like a lady—so gentle and polite
Patient, loyal, and ready to be someone’s very best friend

Mittens is the perfect mix of fun, snuggly, and well-mannered. She’d thrive in a home where she gets plenty of love, a little structure, and all the cuddles she can handle.
Come meet Mittens and let her melt your heart—she’s ready to make your lap (and life) complete!

Meet Storm – A Brave Soul in Need of a Second Chance

Not all heroes wear capes, some have wagging tails and hopeful eyes.

Storm was brought to our shelter as a stray by a lady who claimed to have found him wandering alone on Portage Rd. Like every dog who comes through our doors, we held onto hope that his family would come for him. But hours turned into days, and it’s become clear: Storm has been left behind.

Despite the confusion and abandonment he's faced, Storm remains gentle, trusting, and full of quiet strength. Now it's our turn to show up for him.

During his veterinary evaluation, we discovered a painful, raw mass on his chest and troubling signs in one of his paws. While these symptoms could be treatable, they also raise serious concerns—including the possibility of cancer.

To give Storm the best fighting chance, we need to move quickly.

We’re aiming to raise $900 to cover the full scope of his medical needs, which includes:
A full blood panel to assess his internal health
X-rays to examine the paw and check for underlying issues
Neuter surgery (while under anesthesia)
Mass removal and biopsy to determine if it’s cancerous

Our shelter is committed to the health and wellbeing of every dog in our care, but we can't do it without your support. Every donation, no matter how small—brings Storm closer to the healing and hope he deserves.

Please consider donating or sharing Storm’s story. Help us turn his heartbreak into a new beginning.
He may have been left behind once, but together, we can make sure he’s never forgotten again!

Name: Slugger
Age: 8 Years
Gender: Intact Male
Breed: Pug mix
Weight: 11.5 Pounds

Slugger is a dog with a heart as big as his appetite! He has an insatiable love for food and thoroughly enjoys every meal, snack, or treat that comes his way. Thankfully, he’s not food aggressive, so you don’t have to worry about him getting territorial over his tasty delights. Whether it’s a hearty bowl of kibble or a special treat, Slugger will devour it with enthusiasm.

When it comes to physical affection, Slugger is a laid-back guy who enjoys being touched. He’s good with all types of handling, whether it’s a gentle belly rub or a quick check-up, making him easy to care for. However, there is one thing that really gets him wiggling in protest—nail trims. Slugger is not a fan and will often try to squirm away, making it clear he’s not keen on the grooming process.

Socially, Slugger gets along well with other dogs, especially those who have a similar energy level. He’s been housed with multiple dogs in the past and has always done well in a group setting. Whether they’re lounging together or calmly enjoying each other’s company, he’s a good companion to other like-minded pups.

Slugger isn’t the type to engage in high-energy games like chasing after toys. Instead, he prefers the simple pleasures in life, like leisurely walks where he can take his time to enjoy the sights and smells around him. If you’re looking for a dog who loves food, good company, and easygoing walks, Slugger might just be your perfect match.

Sweet Kendra is recovering well from her recent surgery to remove a mass, and she's been such a brave girl through it all. She came in for stitch removal and was the best good girl!

Unfortunately, her pathology report brought some tough news — the mass was a high-grade mast cell tumor, which means it's likely to return. While this isn’t the outcome we had hoped for, Kendra is now safe and comfortable in her loving foster home where she’ll get all the care, love, and belly rubs she deserves.

Despite everything, Kendra’s personality is beginning to blossom! She’s becoming besties with her foster sister and is learning how much fun toys can be. Walks are quickly becoming a favorite part of her day, too!

We’ll keep you posted on her journey. For now, we’re celebrating the little victories and making every day count for this special girl. We greatly appreciate her foster for all she is doing for this sweet girl!

Kendra is still available for adoption ! If you'd like to give her a cozy retirement home, apply here: https://www.waynedogshelter.org/adoption-questionnaire

Charlie is checking in with a post-surgery update. He would like to thank everyone who donated to the surgery to remove his bum leg, and let you know that he is feeling SOOOO much better, now that he doesn't have that broken thing in his way! His incision is looking great, and he and his foster mom are looking forward to having his stitches out next week, so they can have more than just potty walks. In the meantime, he is enjoying being spoiled, sleeping in bed and under the covers every night. Thanks again to all who helped Charlie feel better!

We Love Dogs!

The Wayne County Dog Shelter was founded in September 2015. We are a county shelter meaning we are operated by Wayne County and funded by the sale of Dog Licenses as well as private donations. Our shelter takes in approximately 650 dogs per year. These dogs are primarily found running loose throughout Wayne County but we also take in Owner Released dogs on a case by case basis.

Our goal is to be the primary resource in Wayne County for all things dogs. We love our dogs and are capable of providing the utmost care for those that come through our doors. We work tirelessly with each and every dog to return it to it’s owner or rehome it into a new loving furever home.

Please check out our photo albums to view our adoptable dogs and be sure to check out our events page as well. All of our adoptable dogs are currently $75. This includes a 5way vaccine, bordetella, dewormer, rabies vaccine, flea treatment, heartworm test, microchip, and dog license.
