Henna is our High Drive, High Heart, One of a Kind herding dog!

Say hello to Henna, our energetic, eager-to-please Border Collie with a whole lot of drive and even more love to give.

Henna is the kind of dog who lights up when you give him a task. Whether it’s playing fetch, learning a new trick, or just being by your side, this boy is all in. He’s smart, focused, and thrives on structure, mental stimulation, and purposeful activity. If you’ve worked with high-drive dogs before, you’ll immediately recognize the potential in this guy.

He’s making great progress in our care, staying active, engaged, and showing off his quick-learning nature every day. But we also want to be transparent: Henna does have a few medical abnormalities that make him a little different. We have ran all the tests recommended and he has passed with flying colors. We do know that Henna doesn’t let anything slow him down, so even though he's not "normal", don't you dare tell him any different.

He’s living in the moment, soaking up every bit of attention and opportunity to interact. And he’s ready for someone who will see past the unknowns and recognize the incredible, one-of-a-kind dog he is.

Today’s play group was a whirlwind of tail wags, zoomies, and playful barks! We welcomed a few newer faces into the yard, and they jumped right into the fun with our rowdy regular crew.

The energy was high, but everyone played nicely and learned a lot about social cues and pack play. Our new pups are already settling in and showing off their personalities, and it was great to see some of our more confident dogs helping them feel right at home.

Whether they were chasing tails, rolling in the grass, or just doing happy laps around the yard, it was clear these pups were living their best lives today.

One of our amazing volunteers took Myrtle out of the shelter for a day and here's what she had to say:

"I had the pleasure of taking Ms. Myrtle out on a doggie date. This sweet senior lady was a gem! She rode great in the car, walked at a nice slow pace, loved taking in all the new sniffs, and took treats gently. She never once barked. I know she is dreaming of sharing her senior years with a loving family, and a nice cozy bed for lots of naps! If you're looking for a gentle, sweet, old soul, Myrtle is your girl".

🍦🐾 Sidecar’s Sweet Adventure! 🐾🍦

Our volunteer, Rena, treated Sidecar to a special day out, complete with an ice cream break! 🩷 From “yum” to “delish,” Sidecar clearly gave this treat a 10/10 rating!

Sidecar had the best time soaking up the sunshine, enjoying some one-on-one time, and showing off her goofy, lovable personality. She’s as sweet as the ice cream she’s licking and she’s available for adoption! 🍨🐶

She’s all in when it comes to toys—squeakers are her favorite soundtrack, but a good bouncy ball will do the trick too. Once the zoomies hit, stand clear—she zips around like a little whirlwind (ankles beware), then crashes for cuddles and belly rubs.

Remi’s smart, too. She already knows sit, down, and how to give 5. Food and toys are great motivators—she’s eager to learn and loves showing off.

Cats? Not her thing.

We Love Dogs!

The Wayne County Dog Shelter was founded in September 2015. We are a county shelter meaning we are operated by Wayne County and funded by the sale of Dog Licenses as well as private donations. Our shelter takes in approximately 650 dogs per year. These dogs are primarily found running loose throughout Wayne County but we also take in Owner Released dogs on a case by case basis.

Our goal is to be the primary resource in Wayne County for all things dogs. We love our dogs and are capable of providing the utmost care for those that come through our doors. We work tirelessly with each and every dog to return it to it’s owner or rehome it into a new loving furever home.

Please check out our photo albums to view our adoptable dogs and be sure to check out our events page as well. All of our adoptable dogs are currently $75. This includes a 5way vaccine, bordetella, dewormer, rabies vaccine, flea treatment, heartworm test, microchip, and dog license.
