Meet Francis — a brave, three-week-old kitten who came to us just two weeks ago… missing a leg. (photos in comments)

We don’t know how it happened. Somehow, her tiny limb was just gone. At her age, most shelters would have deemed her a lost cause. But not us. We decided to give her a chance — and she took it with all the strength her little body had.

Francis arrived severely underweight with a horrific wound that, at first, didn’t look too serious… until the maggots were removed, the tissue was flushed and cleaned, and the antibiotics were started. What we uncovered was heartbreaking. But through it all, Francis purred. She never stopped purring.

She has since doubled in size, is a voracious eater, and has won every heart in the room. She’ll receive the final procedure to close her wound this coming week, but we’ve been keeping it open to allow it to properly drain and heal. She’s been an absolute champ through every bandage change, every flush, every syringe feeding. And yes — she’s still purring.

Francis fought to live.

Situations like Francis’ are heartbreaking — and preventable. Outdoor kittens suffer like this because they’re born into a world that didn’t plan for them. Spaying and neutering saves lives. If you see unaltered cats outside, say something. Do something. And if we can help, please reach out. We will provide you with resources and help how we can when we can.

Thank you for supporting our tiniest fighters.

This is animal advocacy.

We currently have 260 animals in our care—and that number grows every single day. The need for us to take in cats is never-ending. Whether it’s from the police department, dog warden, strays, or owner surrenders, we’re constantly called upon to help. Since January 1st, we’ve taken in 1,188 animals.

If you’ve ever considered adopting or fostering, now is the time. We desperately need your help. Out of the 260 animals currently in our care, 188 are cats—kittens, adults, seniors—all waiting for a second chance.

We know it can be frustrating when we hit maximum capacity and have to place people on a waiting list. Please know: we will never turn away emergency cases. But if your cat is friendly, social, and healthy, you may be asked to wait 1–2 weeks depending on how quickly we can find homes for those already in our care.

When you adopt, you save two lives—the cat you take home, and the one who now has space to come in for the help they so desperately need.

Please stop in during our open hours to meet the many sweet faces waiting for their forever homes. Your visit could change a life.

Meet Betty!

At around six years old, Betty is finally getting her first real taste of what it means to be a dog. After spending the early part of her life in a puppy mill, this gentle soul has been learning the ropes of home life in a loving foster home — and she’s come such a long way.

Betty adores the company of other dogs, who help her feel safe and bring out her playful side. While she’s still shy and working on her confidence, her foster mom is her safe place — she’ll even hide behind her when the camera comes out. But once she knows you, she’ll let you scoop her up and carry her around with ease.

She’s looking for a quiet, patient home where she can continue to blossom at her own pace. No young kids for this girl, but a calm environment and maybe a canine companion would be perfect. Betty may be reserved, but her capacity for love is endless once she feels secure. She’s ready for a soft landing and a life filled with kindness.

She’s still at the foster home so schedule a time to visit with Paul at [email protected]!

🚨 We’re Hiring — and Yes, We Know About the Haircuts 🚨

Phoenix and Ash would like to announce that we’re hiring Animal Care Technicians!

Yes, they know their haircuts are a little… unique right now.
Yes, they got into a sticky mess.
And no — it’s not ringworm! Just a little grooming detour. 😅

Now that we’ve cleared that up…
We’re looking for passionate, hard-working folks to join our animal care team! Full-time or part-time, flexible scheduling, and lots of opportunities to learn and grow in the animal welfare field. Every day is different, and yes — sometimes that includes impromptu haircuts.

If you’re ready to get your hands dirty (and maybe give the occasional bath), we’d love to hear from you!

Email [email protected] with your resume!

As a foster, you’ll help young or sick animals grow their adorable personalities until they're ready for adoption. Your job? Give them food, shelter, and plenty of love!

Ready to help out? Fill out a foster form here: www.wchs.org/foster-application. Let’s save lives together! 💖🐶🐱
