We’ve recently received a lot of frustrated calls regarding flea/tick medication refills, nail trims, and other veterinary services for pets that have either never been seen by our veterinarian, or have not been examined within the last year.

We want to help explain why this happens.

Veterinarians are legally required to have a current Veterinary-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR) before they can diagnose, prescribe, or refill medications. This is not just a clinic policy — it is required by state and federal law.

In most cases, this means your pet must have had an in-person exam with the veterinarian within the past year.

Without a current VCPR, veterinarians legally cannot:
🐾 Prescribe or refill medications
🐾 Recommend treatment plans
🐾 Provide certain medical services

We know this can be frustrating, especially when your pet needs something quickly, but these requirements are in place to protect pets, clients, and veterinary staff.

As a reminder, ALL cats coming to the shelter or clinic must arrive in a secure, appropriate cat carrier.

Please check that your carrier:
✔ Closes securely
✔ Is escape-proof
✔ Is sturdy and in good condition
✔ Is designed specifically for transporting cats

Because of the additional time, handling, and risk involved in safely securing these cats, we will now be charging:
🐾 $20 inappropriate carrier handling fee
🐾 $10 cardboard carrier
