Winnsboro Texas Animal Shelter

Winnsboro Texas Animal Shelter In 1997, the City of Winnsboro planned and built a 1700 square foot animal shelter to handle the increasing volume of neglected and unwanted animals.

" Help Us Help Them " To provide a comfortable, safe and healthy environment for the abandoned, surrendered, abused, unwanted and lost animals in our community while exerting every effort to locate kind and caring “forever” homes for them. The shelter was started with a $10,000.00 donation and opened, and continues today, as a certified quarantine facility and is inspected annually by the State of

Texas Health Department. The shelter is located on 5 acres of land to allow for growth. Three other Texas cities have used the Winnsboro Shelter plan as a model for their shelters, Jefferson, Bonham and Marshall, Texas. The Shelter currently has 15 indoor dog runs (eight runs measure 3’ x 8’, seven runs measure 3’ x 5’) and 9 feline cages. The shelter handles approximately 1000 – 1200 plus animals each year. The Shelter quarantine/exam room has a 5 unit stainless steel cage bank and a stainless steel exam table. Funds for these items came from the annual garage sale that we have in the spring. In 2025 the Adoption Center was added to the existing shelter creating an additional 4200 square feet.
* Increasing adoption capacity to meet current and future needs by adding 24 dog kennels and 16 cat kennels.
* While also creating a safer environment for a proper intake and holding area for animals brought in by animal services. Although we no longer are a quarantine facility we now have a proper sick/injured holding area.
* The addition improves customer experience by creating a more visible and inviting entrance and animal viewing lobby.
* New dog kennel runs provide fresh air and sunlight for our dog residents waiting for a home.
* Additional upgrades included parking area, fencing, and security cameras.

Sweet Sugar is looking for her forever home🐾

Sugar has been through more change in her young life than any dog should.

After her young owner unexpectedly passed away last fall, Sugar was taken in by her “grandma.” Then life changed again when her grandma suffered a major accident and was temporarily unable to care for her. Now recovered, she made the difficult and loving decision to surrender Sugar, knowing she can no longer give her the care and activity she needs.

Sugar is now with Winnsboro Animal Services, but in a foster home because she doesn’t need the added stress of shelter life on top of everything she’s already been through.

And through it all she’s still the sweetest girl.

☀️ Loves sunshine
🎾 Loves fetch and squeaky toys
🐕 Would likely enjoy another dog to play with
🛋 Can also be perfectly content just hanging out with her people

Sugar is loyal, loving, and well-behaved. She is crate-trained and has excellent house manners.

Like many dogs who’ve been through loss and change, Sugar can be cautious at first and needs patience and gentle introductions. Once she trusts you, her sweet personality shines.

She’s not a big fan of car rides or leashes yet, so a fenced yard for playtime is ideal. Thunderstorms are scary for her, but her anxiety vest helps her feel safe.

Sugar deserves stability, love, and a home where she can finally exhale and just be a dog.

Help us give this girl the happy ending she deserves.

🐾 Can’t adopt right now? You can still make a huge difference 🐾

Not everyone is in a place to bring home a pet—and that’s okay. There are so many ways to support shelter animals while they wait for their forever homes.

We recently found these cute pet beds at Dollar Tree and they would be purr-fect for our cat room!
Simple comforts help make shelter life a little less stressful and a lot more cozy.

Here are a few ways you can help if adoption isn’t an option right now:

🐾 Donate supplies (beds, food, litter, cleaning supplies)
🐾 Sponsor an adoption fee
🐾 Volunteer your time
🐾 Come read with the cats
🐾 Share our adoptable pets on social media
🐾 Foster when space is available

Sometimes helping doesn’t mean taking them home—sometimes it just means showing up for them in other ways.

Every little bit matters. Every act of kindness counts.

🎉 ADOPTED 🎉

238 days........

That’s how long I’ve been waiting.

My name is Cole.
I’m just over a year old, which means I’ve spent a big part of my young life in a shelter.

I came in as a pup, and ever since then, I’ve been waiting for someone to see me… really see me.

Because I’m not tiny?
Because someone keeps scrolling past me?

I don’t know why I keep getting overlooked.

What I do know is I’m still here.
Still hoping.
Still wagging my tail every time someone walks by.

At just a year old, I should be learning what it’s like to have a yard, a couch, a family, and someone to call my own.

Instead, I’m waiting.

Maybe my person just hasn’t found me yet.
Maybe they’re reading this right now.

Could it be you?

Come meet Cole at City of Winnsboro Animal Services 835 Hope Lane Winnsboro, TX 75494
