Established in the early 1950s by Dr. CP Enge and Dr. Eiler Fredrickson, Cottonwood Veterinary Clinic began

by serving livestock farmers in Southwest Minnesota. The clinic, continuously operating at its Highway 60 location since 1955, adapted over the decades, transitioning from a primarily large animal facility to a comprehensive small animal clinic, hospital, and surgical center, while still supporting local farmers. Key figures like Dr. Ron Kuecker, who joined in 1965 to expand pet care, and long-time owner Dr. Mike Stone, helped shape the clinic's evolution. Today, the clinic is solely owned by Dr. Scott Kuecker (son of Dr. Ron Kuecker), who also owns Marshall Animal Hospital. Alongside Dr. R Kent Leckie, Dr. Travis Freiwald, Dr. Brok Miller, Dr. Ramsey Pederson and an support amazing team, Cottonwood Veterinary Clinic continues its legacy, offering up-to-date facilities and caring veterinary medicine for both pets and livestock in the region.

If pavement feels hot to your hand, it’s often far too hot for your dog’s paws. ☀️🐾

Asphalt and concrete can become dangerously hot very quickly during warmer weather, especially in direct sunlight.

Paw pad burns can happen within minutes and may cause:
• blistering
• peeling
• limping
• redness
• pain
• refusal to walk

A common safety guideline:
If you cannot comfortably hold the back of your hand on the pavement for several seconds, it is likely unsafe for your dog.

Safer options include:
• early morning walks
• evening walks
• grassy routes
• shaded trails
• dog booties if needed

Many owners underestimate just how hot pavement surfaces can become.

Blue-green algae is one of the most dangerous warm-weather risks many dog owners still don’t know enough about. ⚠️🐶

This toxic bacteria can grow in:
• ponds
• lakes
• slow-moving water
• standing water

It often appears as:
• green slime
• paint-like scum
• green surface streaks
• pea soup-looking water

Even small amounts can be deadly if ingested.

Dogs may be exposed by:
• drinking contaminated water
• swimming
• licking fur afterward

Symptoms can appear very quickly and may include:
• vomiting
• diarrhea
• weakness
• drooling
• seizures
• difficulty breathing
• collapse

If exposure is suspected, immediate veterinary care is critical.

When in doubt, it’s safest to keep dogs away from suspicious water entirely.
