Mazie is two weeks into her behavior modification program, and we’re already seeing big changes! We’re helping her move away from getting a “dopamine fix” from biting, and instead, we’re building up her serotonin—think calm, happy, and stable.
Mazie used to rely on aggression when she felt unsafe because she’s a less confident dog. We’re working on boosting her confidence, teaching her owners to really listen to what she’s communicating, and exposing her to new things bit by bit so she can work through her fears without feeling overwhelmed.
Here’s a key part: when Mazie makes a good choice—like walking away from a trigger, checking in with her owner, or laying down—we reward her right away. That’s called counter conditioning. It means we’re teaching her that calm, thoughtful choices make the scary thing go away and good things happen instead.
Counter conditioning is all about changing how a dog feels, not just how they act. By rewarding calm, confident behaviors, we’re helping Mazie find new ways to cope and giving her the tools for a happier, more relaxed life—way beyond just biting!
