Why is it so important to keep your dog fit, and mentally & physically active for as long as you can... and then some?
As dogs age they (like most of us) lose muscle as it becomes harder to maintain, sometimes genetic or structural issues create more of an obstacle, and aging has major effects on cognitive function. All of these things combined can make each year, and each month harder on aging dogs. Often as dogs age the first thought is it's time to slow down. Wrong. It's time to adjust. Find out what your dog will benefit from and help them maintain or build. Mentally engage them. Re-evaluate your training and play plans to match the dog infront of you and benefit them. I have a huge soft spot in my heart for senior dogs 🩵
Some super easy things you can do with your aging dog to: holding a square stand or switching positions to help posture and balance, paw raises or nose targets for mental and physical coordination, sniffing out treats (or odor) to keep that brain searching and scratch that hunting itch, and keeping a good balanced diet and keeping excess wait off your pup! Also do not be afraid to talk to your veterinarian to see if pain management options are right for your pup. Sometimes pain or discomfort can greatly restrict and reduce a dog's desire to do activities.
