Lunging, barking, and snapping at other dogs or people usually isn't born out of "dominance." It almost always comes from fear and overwhelm.

When a dog feels trapped on a leash and perceives a threat, their instinct is to create distance: "If I make enough noise, the scary thing will go away."

If you are walking a reactive or aggressive dog, remember:

-You are not a bad dog owner.
-Your dog is not a "bad dog."

Punishing the growl only removes the warning sign, it doesn't fix the underlying fear.

✨ Impulse Control Challenge ✨

Does your dog act like food will disappear into thin air if they don't inhale it immediately? Impulse control is like a muscle, if you don't work it out in low-distraction environments, it won't hold up when a squirrel darts across the yard.

The 30-Second "Wait at the Door" Test:

1. Walk up to the exit door and reach for the handle.
2. If your dog tries to bolt or push past, step back and close it.
3. Wait for a sit and eye contact before opening the door even an inch.
4. Only release them with a clear cue like "Free!" or "Let's go!"

They may both be incredible dogs, but they have very different jobs!

Service Dogs are individually trained to perform specific tasks for a person with a disability. Their job is focused on helping their handler navigate everyday life.

Therapy Dogs work with their owners to provide comfort and support to other people in places like schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and other facilities. Therapy dogs do not have the same public-access rights as service dogs.

Both require solid obedience, good manners, confidence, and the ability to remain calm around distractions.

No matter the job, it all starts with the right training and a strong dog-and-handler team.
