Second Chances Veterinary Care

Second Chances Veterinary Care We are an affordable, friendly veterinary hospital. Walk-ins and Same Day Appointments Available! All information is then shared with the doctor. EST.

Second Chances Veterinary Care (SCVC) is an INDEPENDENTLY OWNED outpatient surgery, procedural and urgent care veterinary clinic. Our first mission is to provide no-nonsense veterinary care at affordable prices because pet owners deserve the chance to give their pet the care it needs…

Our second mission is to be a resource for a network of local general, ER, urgent care, and specialty veterinary

practices for their clients who cannot afford the treatment plans presented to them. Each practice has its own unique costs of providing services, so understandably, each needs to charge accordingly for their time, staff, inventory used, etc. Owners find that any treatment plan can vary from one type of practice to another. At the root of our mission is to extend care to more pets in need while working with their family veterinarian. We can help remove clinic-related barriers that prevent pets from getting the care they need. SCVC’s highly innovative practice model is designed to provide a practical SPECTRUM OF CARE by meeting pet owners where they are financially. While we do not extend credit directly through the hospital, we offer flexible payment options through third-party vendors, some requiring no minimum credit score. To help keep our services, medicines, products and prices affordable, we would like to make you aware of the following:

We operate on a technician-driven appointment model, which offers cost savings without compromising care. This means pet parents may not directly see or consult with a doctor during their scheduled appointment time. A technician-driven appointment model allow us to accomplish the following:

Efficiency: Our model optimizes efficiency, allowing us to provide accessible and affordable care to more pets. Skilled Veterinary Staff: Highly trained veterinary staff members gather information provided by the pet parent given before the appointment, confirm additional details once you and your pet arrive, then perform initial evaluations and diagnostics. Doctor Examination: The doctor then conducts a thorough examination based on the information provided, asking for additional details if needed. Diagnostic & Treatment Plan: The doctor develops a PERSONALIZED diagnostic and treatment plan for EVERY PET and communicates it to you through the veterinary staff, phone, or digital channels. Direct veterinary consultation [in-person or telehealth] with the doctor is available; however is not included in the initial office visit or examination charges. A request for professional veterinary consultation services can be added-on at any time for current patients. Services are billed in 0.1 unit hourly increments with a 0.3 unit minimum. Dr. Mausbach’s professional service rate for a consultation (in-person, phone, email, text) is $240/hour. A 15-minute minimum consultation fee (0.3 hours) is $72.00. This rate is subject to change at any time. While our business model is not geared toward general wellness or chronic patient and disease management, we do hold regular wellness clinics as well as vaccine & wellness service appointment availability [vaccinations, deworming, access to complete in-house & reference laboratory testing, heartworm & FeLV/FIV testing, flea/tick/heartworm preventative and more] with one of our experienced staff members. We gladly see any patient who has had surgery or procedure at our facility for recheck examinations and follow-up care. We always advocate that you find a family veterinarian to establish a trusted and long lasting relationship for all of your pet’s other needs: doctor-directed annual wellness exams, continued care, and ongoing chronic disease management. We strongly advocate for pet-parents to download and utilize a TELEHEALTH APP. Telehealth can often be a reasonable, low-cost alternative to get your pet-related questions answered; labwork interpreted, and oftentimes, medications [re]filled. We recommend the telehealth following services; however, we are not directly affiliated with or accountable for the advice received: Pawp, Dutch, Fuzzy, or Connect with a Vet by Chewy. These organizations listed all have one or more options: no-cost, low-cost, free trial periods, medication refills, and online access to $3,000+ of emergency pet funds for a low monthly membership rate. If you do not have a smartphone, you can also call PetIQ Veterinary Telehealth Helpline at 1-800-775-4519, FREE, seven days a week, 10 a.m.—7 p.m. We are also ready to work hand in hand with local veterinarians, shelters, rescues, & more to provide HIGH QUALITY PROCEDURAL & DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES to dogs and cats. We want to form a partnership with the patient’s current provider to ensure the best URGENT CARE MANAGEMENT for both the pet parent & the patient. We always advocate for pet parents to return to their family veterinarian for all follow-up, chronic disease management, & general wellness exams. We look forward to helping you and your pet with their surgical and urgent care needs soon! Sincerely, Dr. Lisa Mausbach and the Staff at Second Chances Veterinary Care

FIP Awareness Spotlight: Gordito's Journey ✨🐾

Meet Gordito, a brave young kitty whose story is one of resilience, hope, and the power of advancing veterinary medicine. 💛

Gordito's health struggles began soon after adoption. He battled gastrointestinal issues, respiratory trouble, and even tested positive for parvo. Despite treatment, his condition worsened—he became lethargic, weak, and developed jaundice.

By March, radiographs and bloodwork revealed concerning signs: anemia, low platelets, high bilirubin, and enlarged kidneys. The suspected diagnosis? Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP)—a disease that, until recent years, was almost always considered fatal.

But Gordito's family and veterinary team refused to give up. 🙌 On March 31, 2025, Gordito began treatment with a groundbreaking antiviral medication (GS-441524). Slowly but surely, his spark returned. His appetite improved, his energy came back, and his weight skyrocketed from just 2.35 kg to over 13 lbs! 🐱💪

After nearly 20 weeks of treatment—longer than the standard 12 weeks—his bloodwork stabilized, his symptoms resolved, and Gordito was declared in remission in late August. Today, he is thriving, playful, and full of life. 🎉

🌟 Why share Gordito's story?
Because FIP doesn't have to be a death sentence anymore, new antiviral therapies are changing outcomes for cats worldwide, giving them a fighting chance at long, healthy lives. Awareness is key—many pet owners and even some veterinarians may not realize that treatment is available.

If you ever hear the word "FIP" and feel hopeless, remember Gordito's story. With timely diagnosis, dedicated care, and access to new treatments, there is hope. Gordito is proof that FIP remission is possible. 🐾

From owners: Jacob B. & Cari M.
“He is so loving and happy to be alive. It's like he knew what happened to him. He's very affectionate. We hope his story helps other kitties."

🐕⏰ Celebrating National Walk Your Dog Week with this important question!

The answer varies based on your dog's age, breed, and health status. Most adult dogs benefit from 30 minutes to 2 hours of daily exercise. High-energy breeds like Labs or Border Collies may require more, while senior dogs or flat-faced breeds may need shorter, more gentle outings.

Start with what your dog can comfortably handle and gradually build endurance. Remember, a mentally stimulating walk with plenty of sniffing can be just as valuable as a longer, fast-paced walk! 🚶‍♀️🐾

Swayze, a sweet German Shepherd mix, came in for what seemed like a routine puppy wellness exam—but that visit changed his life.

During his exam, our team detected diminished lung sounds on one side. We recommended chest x-rays, which revealed something serious: a diaphragmatic hernia. His stomach, liver, and intestines had moved into his chest cavity, crowding his lungs and explaining his poor weight gain and breathing troubles.

Thanks to early detection and advanced imaging, Swayze was referred for specialty surgery. Just days later, his hernia was repaired—and today he is thriving! In just a few weeks, he gained over 5 pounds and is eating, growing, and breathing like the happy pup he deserves to be.

Hear from Swayze’s owner about their experience:

"The staff is great, Julia and Swayze have developed a great bond. I was struggling to help him put on weight and didn't know why. I brought him to you all for a general checkup post-rescue and to round out his vaccines, glad I did. We caught it early enough so Swayze's organs weren't damaged, and surgery went well. Now he has a big appetite and is putting on a lot of weight. He's back to being a puppy. Also, the CASE referral was a good call. They did great with his surgery and care."

Swayze’s journey is a reminder that routine exams and diagnostics can save lives. 💙 We are so thankful to his family for their trust and to the specialty team for their excellent care.
