As we celebrate Veterinary Receptionist Appreciation Week (VRAW), I wanted to take a moment to share a bit of the history behind this special time of recognition—and express our deepest gratitude to those who serve as the welcoming face and organizational heart of our veterinary practices.
VRAW was established by the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) to highlight the critical role that veterinary receptionists play in animal healthcare. Observed during the last full week of April each year, this week is dedicated to honoring the professionals who are often the first and last point of contact for pet owners. They juggle phone calls, appointments, emotional clients, and countless other responsibilities with patience, compassion, and efficiency.
These unsung heroes help build trust with clients, support the veterinary team, and ensure the smooth operation of the clinic—making an enormous impact on both client satisfaction and patient care.
Let’s take this opportunity to thank and celebrate our amazing Client Care Team for all that they do - between the days of 4/20-4/26 we celebrate them, your recognition means the world.

🚨 Patient Spotlight: Felina 💪💕

Meet Felina, a brave 6.5-year-old American Bulldog mix who came to us in critical condition after being transferred from our friends at Animal Urgent Care in Arvada. She was battling pyometra—a severe, life-threatening uterine infection—and subsequent sepsis.

Thanks to the quick action of Dr. Scott and our ER team, Felina was swiftly prepped for surgery. Dr. McNamara and our surgical crew performed a life-saving ovariohysterectomy and repaired a duodenal perforation caused by the infection. She spent 3 days recovering in our ICU, where she received round-the-clock care and lots of love from our amazing tech, Anne 💕🐾

From dull and lethargic to bright-eyed and tail-wagging, Felina’s transformation has been nothing short of incredible. We’re keeping a close eye on her with rechecks and check-ins—and she’s continuing to improve like a champ! 🐶✨

Huge shoutouts to our ER, Critical Care, Surgery, and ICU teams, and a special thanks to AUC for the trust and transfer. We love you, Felina! 💖

WE ARE SAD TO SEE THIS CRAZY GIRL GO!!!

Miss Nola was truly a hero! Four years of lifesaving donations is an incredible legacy. Over four years as a blood donor, she donated 14 units of blood and saved 29 lives! She gave so many pets a second chance, and her impact will never be forgotten. Wishing her a well-earned retirement filled with love, treats, and all the belly rubs! 💕🐾

🌟 Meet Ruckus, our adorable 6-month-old pitbull who had quite the adventure! 🐾 He came to our ER after some tummy troubles, including vomiting and not wanting to eat. After an abdominal ultrasound recommended by Dr. Musarra, our radiologist discovered that a foreign object was causing the issue. Thanks to our amazing Dr. Prink and surgery team, Ruckus underwent an emergency exploratory surgery. Can you guess what they found? A squeaker from a toy! After a night of care, he’s back home and feeling like a champ! 🏡❤️ Thank you to our excellent staff for promptly ensuring that Ruckus got the fantastic care he needed and for his family entrusting us with his care!

Whiskey Girl’s story is wonderfully written by her mom:

“Whiskey Girl is my COVID cliche. When the world started shutting down rapidly in March 2020, and every phone call I took was from a meeting planner canceling their conference (I’m a keynote speaker, so conferences are my primary workplace), I realized I needed to do something positive for my own mental health.

As I considered what I could do for the “few weeks” of the pandemic (oh, the naiveté of March 13, 2020) that would serve my community and bring joy, and that was something I could not regularly do given my travel schedule, I realized I could foster puppies.

On March 21, 2020, I took in the first two (2) of what would be nine foster pups (and a few kittens, too) over the next year— 2 adorable golden doodle pups. I had zero intent on keeping either of them. At the time, Bella Love, my soul dog, was nearly 15 years old, and I did not plan to complicate her senior years with a puppy.

Within two weeks, Bella had made it clear that Whiskey Girl was HER dog. And so Whiskey Girl became a permanent member of our little family.

Whiskey Girl is a member of Denver Pet Partners. When her purple vest comes out, she KNOWS it’s time to “go to work.” The phrase “let’s go see the kids” will wake her from a nap, and she will instantly run to the door, ready to go.

She can read pain in a human, unlike any dog I have ever met. There is a particular way that she sets her head on someone that tells me the person is in deep pain with recent trauma. I’m not sure how she does it, but clearly she is well suited to her role as a therapy assistance pup.

In addition to serving with DPP, Whiskey Girl is a blood donor through Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital. Oh my gosh, does she love the blood donation team at Wheat Ridge! She sashays up to the door like she is walking the red carpet. Between the love they dote on her and the FULL CAN of dog food that she receives after her donation, she thinks donation day is fantastic.

From puppy mill bail-out to active volunteer, Whiskey Girl is the best!

Whiskey Girl has been a blood donor for 2 years, donated 10 units, and saved 18 lives!! Way to go, Whiskey! You are such a special girl!

Our Story

COVID-19 UPDATE: Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital remains open to handle any of your emergency needs. To support this effort, we have adopted a curbside concierge service in our parking lot. We will greet clients outside to capture information about your pet's clinical needs at a physical distance and/or by phone. Once we have your pet registered, you may either remain in their car or leave and return later to pick up your pet. Part of the community since 1955. We started as a general practice and have grown to a unique hospital which combines the general practice, a specialty referral practice and a 24-hour emergency and critical care practice. Our clients rely on our dedicated team to provide excellent care for our patients, and first-class customer service to pet owners and their primary care veterinarians. We are very excited to be recognized as a 50-year member in 2013.
