We spend so much time trying to change our dogs, fixing behaviours, and making them easier, calmer, and less expressive. We ask them to fit into our routines and adapt to our noise, pace, and demands. We want them to settle, ignore instincts, and suppress the things they were born to do. We forget their genetics. We forget their purpose. We forget that we invited animals into our homes and asked them to fulfill some human child niche.

Scent work gives them an outlet for everything they’ve been trying to show us, and it reveals them. And you see your dog working in alignment with who they are. You stop managing a behaviour… and start building a partnership. You’re learning to stop micromanaging. Scent work asks humans to be present in a way most things don’t. It asks you to believe in your dog. You’ll question yourself. You’ll wonder if you “read it right,” if you’re doing enough, if your dog is doing too much. But every time you choose to trust your dog…every time you pause and follow instead of lead…you see and admire them actually for who they are.

My personal scent detection experience in law enforcement is heavily influencing my behavior now. It has pluses and minuses, but without fighting it, I am working on advancing my abilities as a handler. The more advanced the handler, the less ‘perfect’ the indication needs to be. Because you’re not standing there waiting for a polished, prepped behaviour that checks your mental box. You’re reading the dog from the very start. You know what information they’re picking up, how they’re processing it, and you can feel the moment the indication is coming, sometimes before the dog even offers it. I am not yet at that level but gaining experience reading the whole picture.

Blind inaccessible hide work. This is where I am as a handler today. This journey is a pleasure for all of us ❤️🐾

It's been a whole day, but I still can't grasp the reality of tragically losing Lola out of nowhere in a matter of hours.

My heart goes out to Lydia, her family, and everyone who knew this sweet girl.

She was truly a part of our family here. We expected her to visit us in a week, and the emptiness beside Rigby will be unbearable.

We will not forget your sweetness, loyalty, silliness, Rigby parenting skills, and courage in keeping your mom safe in her travels.
