One close call is one too many. Here's what actually works:

1. Teach a rock-solid recall first. "Come" or "Stop" should work even when your dog is distracted, excited, or mid-sprint. Practice it near the road on a long line before you ever trust it off-leash.

2. Never rely on "they never go near the road." Dogs are unpredictable. A squirrel, a kid on a bike, or another dog is all it takes. Assume the temptation will happen and train for it.

3. Create a physical boundary. An underground containment system (like Dog Guard) gives your dog real yard freedom without the risk of a split-second bad decision.

4. Exercise before yard time. A tired dog is a safer dog. High-energy dogs are far more likely to bolt. A walk or play session before letting them out makes a real difference.

5. Know your dog's triggers. Squirrels? Bikes? Other dogs? Train specifically around those distractions. The environment matters.

Save this for the next time you let your dog outside. 🐾

They'll be so much happier with this!

GPS collars sound convenient until you're charging them every night, paying monthly fees, and watching your dog test a boundary that drifts 10 feet depending on the signal.

Dog Guard's underground system is precise, proven, and backed by a Local Pro who actually knows your yard.

No subscriptions. No guessing.

Just a dog who gets to be a dog.

And if you're reading this, you probably feel the same way.

Because dog people just get it. We rearrange our schedules around walks. We share our pillows. We talk to them like they understand every word. (They do.)

Our dogs give us everything they have, every single day. The least we can do is give them a life worth wagging about.

After 38 years in this business, we've learned that the families who never have to chase their dog down the street all have one thing in common: they didn't wait for a close call to make a plan.

Most dog escapes aren't dramatic. They're the result of something small that nobody got around to fixing and an owner who figured they'd deal with it when the time came.

GPS technology has up to 10 feet of accuracy drift. That means your dog's actual boundary could shift 10 feet in any direction and the system has no way to know.

For a large open field? That drift is manageable.

For a typical suburban yard? That 10-foot uncertainty zone covers a significant portion of your usable space and your dog's safety margin.

Dog Guard uses a buried wire system. The boundary is exactly where you set it. Not approximately. Not within 10 feet. Exactly.

Your yard size shouldn't determine whether your dog is actually safe. That's why we've been doing this with wired systems since 1988.

It's 7am. You let the dog out. Then you remember that you forgot to charge the GPS collar last night.

Now the collar is dead, the boundary doesn't exist, and your dog has no idea.

This isn't a worst-case scenario because for GPS collar owners, it's just a Tuesday.

We're not here to scare you. We just think your dog's safety shouldn't depend on whether you remembered to plug something in last night.

Dog Guard's receiver collar runs for 30 days on a single charge. Not overnight. Not every few days. 30 days.

Because reliable containment shouldn't have a charging schedule.
