Dog owners are cutting back on almost everything. The smart ones are spending less AND ending up with better-behaved dogs. Here's how. 👇

The American Pet Products Association's 2026 Dog Report is out, and the numbers are wild:

📈 71 million U.S. households now own a dog. That's 53% of the country.
💸 Owners aren't spending less on their dogs. They're spending smarter.

What that looks like:

🛒 Discount-store dog food purchases are up 22%
🦴 Average treat spending is down 11%, but people are buying bigger bulk packs
✂️ 51% now groom their dogs at home
🏨 Boarding and kennel use is dropping. About 4 in 10 owners have a friend or family member watch the dog instead.

Here's what nobody's saying about that list, and I've seen it play out with over 1,000 dogs since 2005.

Every one of those money-savers only works if your dog is trained.

Grooming at home? Good luck with a dog that won't hold still for a nail trim.

Grandma watching your dog while you're away? Not if he drags her down the driveway or bolts out the front door.

Saving on treats? A trained dog works for a fraction of a cookie. An untrained dog needs the whole bag just to sit.

Skipping the kennel? Only if your dog can actually be trusted in somebody else's house.

An untrained dog quietly costs you money in chewed shoes, ripped screens, and boarding you can't avoid. You also pay in stress, which nobody puts in a budget.

The cheapest dog to own is a trained one. You pay for training once. Bad behavior keeps costing you for the rest of the dog's life.

Rover's 2026 report is out. The classics are still winning:

🐶 #1 boy name: Charlie
🐶 #1 girl name: Luna

But the trending list is where it gets weird. These are the fastest-rising dog names in America this year:

1. Rumi
2. Lumi
3. Melo
4. Benito
5. Ducky
6. Beatrice
7. Lottie
8. Junie
9. Cannoli
10. Maisey

Yes, Cannoli. Somebody out there is yelling "CANNOLI, COME!" across a park right now, and I respect it. Rumi is on top because of KPop Demon Hunters, so if your kid named the new puppy, you already knew that.

Now the trainer part, because I've named, renamed, and trained countless dogs since 2005:

Your dog's name matters more than you think.

❌ Don't pick a name that sounds like a command. "Kit" sounds like sit. "Bo" sounds like no. "Ray" sounds like stay. Your dog isn't confused, it's just listening.

✅ One or two syllables works best. It's fast, it's clear, and it cuts through noise. (Cannoli, I'm looking at you.)

❌ Never use their name when you're mad. If "BELLA!" always comes before trouble, Bella learns that her name means bad news and stops coming when you call. Trainers call this a poisoned name, and it's one of the most common recall problems I fix.

✅ Their name should mean one thing: look at me, good stuff is coming.

Scientists study whether dogs expect good things by using a food bowl.

Of course they do. Dogs were never going to fill out a questionnaire.

In one common “optimism” test, a dog learns that a bowl in one spot contains food. In another spot, it’s empty.

Then researchers put the bowl somewhere in between.

How quickly the dog checks that uncertain spot is used as a clue about whether they expect something good.

Pretty clever. But there’s a catch.

A new review of 32 studies found that learning, memory, differences in testing, and inconsistent results over repeated sessions complicate the picture. These tests show promise, but they aren’t a reliable stand-alone happiness meter.

A slow trip to a bowl cannot tell you your dog’s whole emotional story.

My takeaway for dog owners: get curious before you get certain.

Look at patterns.

How does your dog rest?

Do they choose to explore or play?

How do they recover after something unsettling?

What changes across different situations?

Those observations deserve attention together, over time.
Your dog deserves more than a personality label based on one moment.
