New Adventures, New Lessons — And It’s Bike to Work Day!
As a positive reinforcement dog trainer, I’m always encouraging new ways to bond with your dog—and lately, I’ve been learning a new skill myself: bike riding!
Today is Bike to Work Day, and while I may not be biking to a traditional office, I am pedaling into new territory—with a leash in one hand (just kidding—never do that) and dog treats in my f***y pack!
Biking with your dog is an amazing way to get active together, but safety comes first—for both of you. Here are a few tips I’ve picked up on my dog-training-meets-bike-riding journey:
1. Start with Walks First:
Build up solid leash manners before introducing the bike. Use treats and praise for calm, loose-leash walking!
2. Use Proper Equipment:
A hands-free bike leash that attaches to the bike frame is safest. Never ride with a standard leash in hand—it’s a recipe for disaster.
3. Take It Slow (Literally):
Keep your first rides short and slow. Praise often, watch your pup’s body language, and avoid hot pavement.
4. Practice Cues on Foot:
Before adding wheels, teach commands like “stop,” “leave it,” and “slow” using positive reinforcement. It’s all about communication!
5. Pack for Two:
Water, p**p bags, and treats—because your pup is your biking partner, not just a passenger.
Bonus Tip:
If your pup isn’t built for long-distance running or needs a break, a doggy bike trailer can be a game-changer.
I may be a newbie on two wheels, but every ride is a reminder that positive reinforcement works—on and off the leash. Whether you’re biking to the office or just around the block with your pup, happy Bike to Work Day!
