Losing a beloved pet companion is as hard as and sometimes harder than losing a family member. Pets offer unconditional love, a perfect companion, no fights or conflicts, they don’t talk back or criticize. They are always happy to see us and to be there for us when we need them and even when we don’t. Some clients feel guilty that they cry more over the loss of a dog than their parent. They are mourning a relationship of love. Whether it is a dog or cat or a hamster. Pets are special and remind us what it is to be loved and be human. Four of our own staff members had to undergo rabies prophylaxis after we treated an unvaccinated dog who died with possible rabies exposure. Please vaccinate your dogs and cats even if they live indoors. Rabid bats can even come inside homes and expose pets without your knowledge.
