Check it out! From 6 yr old Shih Tzu.
This dog had Non-Anesthetic Teeth Cleanings every 6 months since 1 year of age. Owner came to us (I worked at a veterinary dental specialty clinic) after seeing blood in food bowl. 18 teeth were abscessed. Owner was devastated because she thought she was doing what was best for her dog. This picture shows that the crown was clean but, the real problem was below the gumline. The danger of this type of cleaning is that the owner thinks the teeth are clean but, the infection is hidden. Cleaning below the gumline and dental X-rays can only be done under anesthesia. Education to pet owners is so important!

It’s great when a complicated case turns the corner and is able to be discharged on the road to recovery!
Duke was transferred to us last week from VEG to get a linear foreign body removed from his stomach and intestines. We raced him into surgery and rescheduled some afternoon appointments. Unfortunately, the foreign object caused loss of blood flow to part of the duodenum and we had to perform a resection and anastomosis. He was healing well but then developed a post op pancreatitis ( basically his pancreas was unhappy that it had been squished up in there next to the intestines and that the surgery was so close to it. So he spent an extra week in the hospital on IV fluids, iv meds and support until he finally turned the corner today and perked up, showed interest in food, and could keep food down finally. He got a grooming before he went home too so he looks and smells nice after his long hospital stay.
Mom came every day to visit and was so happy to see him perky finally today. Hoping he continues to do well at home on his slow journey to a complete recovery.

A rabid bat was found at a restaurant in vista. It is a reminder that rabies is very much all around us and our pets. Vaccination is key to preventing this fatal disease in our dogs and cats. And protects all of us from this dangerous zoonotic disease.

County public health officials looking for anyone who may have come into contact with a bat Sunday, July 19 at the Yellow Deli Restaurant in Vista. The bat landed on a table while a family was eating at 1 p.m. Another diner used a towel to collect the bat and bring it to the Humane Society in Oceanside. The bat was then delivered to the County’s Public Health Lab where it tested positive for rabies. Link below in comments.
