Due to all the heavy rain, mosquitoes are everywhere. If you don’t have your pets on heartworm preventative, now is the time to do it. This is a medication that can only be purchased through your vet or certain rescue/adoption centers. You may need to have a little blood test done first to make sure your dog is not already positive with them before starting a preventative. There are some options out there if your dog does test positive, but special approval and watchful eye must be done by your veterinarian if you are a candidate for certain preventatives with a heartworm positive dog. There’s also forms of treatments to help rid your animal of these Heartworms if they test positive. Always consult with your veterinarian because this is a serious issue. Remember, left untreated, these worms will literally eat your dog’s heart up and your pet will die. That’s the black-and-white of it. There are many forms of heartworm preventative, and range in price, so please make sure you research and keep your baby protected. For those that say my dog lives inside and never goes out except to potty, I can’t tell you how many times owners said this to us when I still worked at the vet office, and their dogs tested positive for Heartworms. Mosquitoes are everywhere in South Texas.
