🐾 Not All Animal Shelters Are the Same 🐾
One of the most common questions we receive is, “Why can’t I surrender my pet?” or “Aren’t shelters required to take animals?”
The answer is: it depends on the type of shelter. There are several different types of animal welfare organizations:
🏛️ Municipal Shelters
These shelters are operated by or contracted with local government and are typically responsible for animal control, stray animals, and serving a specific geographic area.
🐾 Private Nonprofit Shelters
Organizations like Fayette Friends of Animals are independently operated nonprofits. We are not funded by local, state, or federal government and rely primarily on donations, grants, fundraising events, and community support to operate.
🏡 Rescue Organizations
Many rescues operate entirely through foster homes without a physical shelter facility. They often focus on specific breeds, species, ages, or medical needs.
❤️ Sanctuaries
Sanctuaries provide long-term care for animals who may not be adoptable due to age, medical conditions, or behavioral challenges.
What makes Pennsylvania unique is that, unlike many states, there is no statewide requirement that local governments provide animal sheltering services or maintain municipal shelters. As a result, communities often rely heavily on private nonprofits, rescue groups, volunteers, and foster families to fill that gap.
At Fayette Friends of Animals, we are a private nonprofit shelter with no municipal contracts and no government funding. Every animal we care for, every adoption we facilitate, every pet pantry distribution, every medical bill we pay, and every life we save is made possible through the support of our community.
We are proud to serve Fayette County and are always working toward expanding our capacity!
Thank you for supporting animal welfare in our community. Together, we are making a difference—one animal at a time. 🐶🐱❤️
