🎃🐾 Tricks, treats, and chemotherapy! 🐾🎃

Meet Maverick! This handsome boy has one of the BEST pajama collections we’ve ever seen, and he never misses an opportunity to show off his style! This week, he arrived for his Doxorubicin treatment sporting some very festive Halloween PJs! 👻🧡

Maverick came to VCG after being diagnosed with splenic hemangiosarcoma (HSA), an aggressive cancer that develops from cells lining blood vessels.

One of the scariest things about splenic HSA is that many dogs show little to no signs of illness until a tumor ruptures, causing a hemoabdomen (bleeding into the abdominal cavity) and often requiring emergency surgery to remove the spleen.

🩺 So, why is chemotherapy recommended even after the spleen is removed?

While surgery removes the primary tumor, HSA has a high risk of spreading to other areas of the body. In fact, microscopic cancer cells may already be present elsewhere by the time a diagnosis is made. Chemotherapy helps target these potentially remaining cancer cells, with the goal of delaying disease progression and giving patients more quality time with their families. ❤️

We’re happy to report that Maverick has been doing great with his Doxorubicin treatments, and we absolutely LOVE seeing his smiling face (and his ever-changing wardrobe) at every visit!
