In Loving Memory of Jim Keith, CJF
1942–2026

The AFA is deeply saddened to share the passing of Jim Keith, CJF.

Jim leaves behind a legacy that is hard to put into words, but is one that includes a lifelong commitment to advancing the art and skill of farriery and being a mentor to so many. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, his friends, and all those whose lives and careers he touched in so many indelible ways.

We invite you to share your photos, stories, and memories of Jim here as we honor his life and celebrate the lasting mark he made on our profession.

put on an exceptional farrier clinic today with Chris Madrid 👏🏼

They not only hosted the clinic & provided lunch, but also had some awesome raffle prizes handed out! (Including nippers generously donated by & dental impressions from )

Chris went over everyday Horseshoeing & shoe making (giving tips on how to improve on keg shoes, you don’t always have to build shoes to shoe well). “Don’t separate making horseshoes, from Horseshoeing.” He stressed working with the horses anatomy, & not cheating the foot when fitting up.
After lunch Chris demonstrated a journeyman straight bar shoe and then judged the forging jackpot.
The jackpot consisted of “novice” being a plain stamp shoe & the “open” was a fullered bar shoe with a 45min time limit. Winner took all 💲 took first place on open & John took first on Novice 👏🏼

Let’s not forget the awesome ruler donated by signed by Billy Crothers (January clinic coming up - stay tuned!!🗓️) The raffle tickets all go back to the ASFA in helping keep events like this coming to you! won with a mere 120 tickets 🫡 also donated a gorgeous shoe that got auctioned off - many thanks for your support & we look forward to having you next year!

Friday’s tool clinic with Chris Madrid was a great turn out & awesome clinic!

Chris went over building, then maintaining punches & pritchels. The basics of tong making and a lot on tuning tongs for your stock - as he recalled Craig Trnka saying “if you can’t hold it, you can’t hit it!”
Chris then went over shoe making in the afternoon and hands on help with what everyone needed individually. He hammered on really knowing your basics so you can build on more skills later “practice your basics, slow is fast, & fast is slow”.

The ASFA provided breakfast & lunch, along with drinks for the day. Tyson Clark provided his shop for the event to take place. Dave Pedersen was there with handles, staying busy fixing up hammers 🔨 And Chris Madrid was awesome to take the whole day explaining & sharing his knowledge of tool & shoe making.

Huge shoutout to everyone who invested and came out to the clinic, you all are awesome & are what helps keep us bringing in awesome clinicians like Chris!! 👏🏼

Something fun for Saturdays clinic with Chris Madrid Vaquero Feed & Livestock Supply! We have a concave caulk & wedge made by Billy Crothers & he also sent us a signed ruler 📏 🖊️
The shoe will be auctioned off and the ruler will be part of a raffle, so be sure to bring some cash to enter 💵
