With all the new followers we thought we would reintroduce ourselves to everyone!

Our names are Josh & Krystal Bearden, we’ve been together since 2015 and married in 2021. We live in a small town called Troy, SC- which is between McCormick and Greenwood. We welcome our first baby in August of 2024, Colter. January of 2026 we welcomed the final piece(s) of our family as far as human children go, our twin boys Baylor & Bryer. Hunting has always been a passion and a way of life for both of us, more so Josh than myself (Krystal), plus I (Krystal) grew up with Labradors. The page, website, breeding, planning, everything is predominantly ran by myself (Krystal) with my husband Josh being the muscle and ā€œyesā€ man 🤣 Josh works full time, and I (Krystal) have become a SAHM to our 3 boys, also groom on the side some, our plates are usually full even when litters arrive however we manage to get it done. With that being said adjusting to new parent life and a new baby at home it’s even more so an adjustment for us as we navigate and try to keep up the high standard we set for ourselves with our program. We breed for temperament, health, quality, and versatility. We pair dogs with what one may lack on to try and make the perfect companion for future families. We are so blessed to have been doing this since our first litter was born August of 2020, and we hope Colter continues in our footsteps and takes over one day- but that’s FAR away. Although now he will play an important role in the socialization of our dogs and be an asset nonetheless.

We want to be able to fully focus on bringing each puppy up and spending time with the older dogs as well which is why we keep our numbers low and consider ourselves smaller breeders. We only ever feel comfortable with raising 2 litters at once (if that ever happens) or 2 litters a year (one from each girl) because we give 110% into each litter making sure they’re exposed to things, helping mom, making sure everything is clean and taken care of. Our girls will never have more than 3-4 litters each depending on their bodies and whelping- did they have an easy birthing- did they bounce back great or did it take a toll on them and they need a break… those are the things we think and consider when debating on to breed them again back to back. Ours dogs health becomes #1 before making any breeding decisions! It’s sad we can’t keep them all, but we place them in great homes and keep up with our retired dogs wherever they go. To keep our home maintainable & to keep smaller we have to rehome our retired dogs/ doesn’t mean we don’t care about them but we can’t keep doing what we’re doing if we kept every single dog and end up with 101 Labradors inside the house (our house isn’t that big lol). We vet each home and make sure it’s a perfect fit before rehoming any of our dogs/ it’s a long thought out process and it’s not immediately after they’re done having puppies either.

Our puppies go home already spoiled and loved you can count on that, and we keep you so informed of the entire process, from the time of breeding, to updates pre whelping, updates after whelping, and even check in periodically after they go home. We are 100% transparent and honest with you guys. It’s better for us and I believe future families this way because we are able to focus more on each litter and puppy individually rather than having 5 plus litters on the ground and the females being bred over and over until they’re way to old in our opinion.

We hope to be able to work with each of you in hopes of expanding our WFR family and finding your perfect furbaby/family member whether it be for hunting, sporting, service prospects, or just a plain house dog/pet. Please feel free to reach out with any questions and we will try our best to give you the right answer/information.

American vs. English Labradors… but here’s the truth: they’re BOTH Labrador Retrievers. 🐾

One of the biggest misconceptions in the Labrador world is that there are ā€œtwo breedsā€ or ā€œtwo standards.ā€ There aren’t.

The AKC, FCI, and Labrador Retriever Club recognize ONE breed and ONE breed standard: the Labrador Retriever.

Over the years, breeders have selectively emphasized different qualities depending on their goals. Some focused on producing exceptional hunting and field dogs, while others focused on producing dogs that excel in the conformation ring. The result is the familiar ā€œAmerican (Field)ā€ and ā€œEnglish (Show)ā€ styles we see today.

Neither style is ā€œbetterā€ than the other.

āœ”ļø Field-bred Labradors tend to be leaner, more athletic, and have higher drive for demanding work.
āœ”ļø Show-bred Labradors tend to have a stockier build, heavier bone, and are bred to meet the written breed standard in the show ring.

What matters most isn’t whether a Labrador is called ā€œAmericanā€ or ā€œEnglish.ā€ It’s responsible breeding, sound structure, excellent health testing, stable temperament, and choosing the dog that best fits your lifestyle.

At River Retrievers, we believe in preserving everything that makes the Labrador Retriever the world’s favorite sporting and family companion—intelligence, versatility, trainability, and an exceptional temperament.

ā¤ļø Different styles. Same breed. Same heart.

What style do you prefer, and why? Tell us in the comments!
