We are so excited to recognize Tom McVeigh as our February Volunteer of the Month! 🎉
When asked what he loves most about volunteering at NTRC, Tom shared:
“As a volunteer what I love most about NTRC is the unique opportunity it provides to be engaged in two of my passions in life, those being working with people with disabilities and their families and horseback riding.”
Before retiring six years ago, Tom spent a 45-year career supporting people with disabilities to be more fully included in their communities, where they work, live, or play. He and his wife have also owned horses for many years, enjoying trail riding, camping, and traveling with them.
Now, he brings those two worlds together at NTRC.
Tom also shared how much he enjoys the relationships built here:
“I greatly enjoy making personal connections with NTRC riders, families, volunteers, staff and others who share this same interest.”
One of his favorite NTRC memories happened at the end of last session, when a participant who previously lacked the confidence to trot without assistance asked if she could trot off lead.
“The smile she had on her face after successfully doing this told the whole story.”
And at the heart of it all, Tom says:
“I believe FUN is at the heart of NTRC’s work. I volunteer because it’s fun, riders participate because it’s fun, and all involved with NTRC play a role in making the experience enjoyable because the real benefits of horseback riding, or any activity and sport, occur when you’re truly having fun!”
Tom, thank you for sharing your passion, your experience, and your heart with our participants and families. We are so grateful for you. 💛
