You think you’re finished and then you hear Dr. Baeza say, “One more time.” 😭

There’s a reason we sometimes need multiple images. Different angles and views can reveal things that might not be visible from a single x ray, helping us get the clearest picture possible before making a diagnosis or treatment plan.

So when you hear “one more,” just know Dr. B is making sure we’ve got everything we need. 😂🐾

Mystery Solved 🐒🩺

Remember our spider monkey who came in after experiencing vomiting? After running diagnostics, Dr. Baeza was able to get to the bottom of what was causing all that stomach trouble.

The culprit? Cheese. 🧀

Like many mammals, spider monkeys can digest milk when they’re young, but as they mature, their ability to digest lactose decreases. Dairy can then cause significant gastrointestinal upset. In this case, the x rays showed a stomach heavily distended with gas, explaining the discomfort and digestive issues we were seeing.

The good news is that we found the cause, treatment is underway, and a full recovery is expected. 💚

Unfortunately, there is one piece of bad news for our patient…

No matter how much the cheese is loved, cheese privileges have officially been revoked. 😂🧀🚫

A Different Kind of Checkup 🐒🩺

Not every patient walking through our doors has paws!

Today we had a macaque in for a routine health evaluation, including a physical exam and bloodwork to give us a closer look at what’s happening beneath the surface.

Blood testing can tell us a lot about an animal’s overall health, even when everything appears perfectly normal on the outside. With exotic species especially, subtle changes can be easy to miss, making preventative care and routine monitoring an important part of keeping them healthy.

From the familiar to the exotic, every patient deserves thoughtful, thorough care tailored to their species and individual needs. 🐒💚

A Successful Day for Peppa 🐷💗

Peppa came to see us for her spay procedure, and we’re happy to share that everything went smoothly!

From preparation through surgery and recovery, our team was right there making sure Peppa was comfortable, closely monitored, and receiving the care she needed every step of the way.

Now the procedure is behind her and the focus shifts to plenty of rest, healing, and taking it easy while she recovers.

Not Everything Is on the Menu 🐒🩺

We had a pretty unique visitor at Street Road Animal Hospital today… a spider monkey!

After the owners introduced cheese into the diet, they noticed vomiting a couple of days later. Rather than assume the food was the only cause, our team is running diagnostics and collecting samples to get a clearer picture of what’s going on and make sure everything is okay.

Spider monkeys have specialized nutritional needs. Their natural diet is largely fruit, supplemented by foods such as leaves, flowers, seeds, and other plant material, with occasional insects. Foods we enjoy as humans aren’t automatically appropriate for primates, and introducing unfamiliar foods can sometimes lead to digestive problems.

That’s one of the things we love about exotic medicine. Every species that comes through our doors is different, and understanding what’s normal for each animal is an important part of figuring out what isn’t.

Taking It One Step at a Time 🦨💚

Chloe was feeling a little shy during her visit, so Dr. Baeza gave her the time and space she needed to get comfortable.

Overall, she’s doing well, but her exam brought up a few common concerns that need some extra attention. That’s exactly why these visits matter. Sometimes an issue may be more common than pet owners realize, and catching it gives us the opportunity to explain what’s happening and figure out the best way forward.

Skunks have their own unique health and care needs, and we’re always happy to welcome exotic patients like Chloe through our doors. For now, we’ll take care of her and keep you updated as we address everything together. 🩺🦨
