Women's Animal Center

Women's Animal Center Women's Animal Center founded in 1869 - Animal Shelter, Pet Adoptions, Vet Hospital, Community Programs and Dog Training
PA Kennel License # 1516

During the late 1800s, the mistreatment of animals was commonplace and those who defended them were often met with contempt and ridicule. One of their most ardent defenders, Philadelphia native Caroline Earle White, helped to establish and fund the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In spite of her vital role, White was denied a seat on the organization’s board because

she was a woman. So, in 1869, White and her colleagues assembled to form their own association, taking over the Philadelphia City Dog Pound and turning it into the First Animal Shelter and Adoptions Program in the nation – today known as Women’s Animal Center (formerly Women's Humane Society)

Now, 150+ years later, Women's Animal Center, carries on the lifesaving legacy of our founders, committed to making the world an ever kinder, more compassionate place for all animals. Women's Animal Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We receive no federal, state or local funding, and depend upon the support and partnership of animal lovers throughout the United States to sustain and expand our mission.

We’re accredited again! 🎉

Last week, Women’s Animal Center Veterinary Hospital received our AAHA re-accreditation, indicating that we received a passing score after being evaluated in over 900 veterinary standards. We are proud to be one of just 15% of veterinary hospitals in North America to receive this accreditation! Congratulations to our veterinarians, technicians, customer service representatives, and all those across our organization who help make this possible!

This marks our 10th year of being AAHA-accredited, and we are thrilled to continue providing the highest standard of care to our patients and their families. We are proud to be an AAHA-accredited hospital! 🧡❤

Meet Tigger, our Shelter Pet of the Week! 🐈

Tigger’s coloring and unique stripes make him look like he’s straight from the jungle, but don’t be fooled- this sweet boy is a house cat through and through! Tigger LOVES attention, and will happily curl up with you for pets and snuggles. The combination of his looks and personality make him so endearing, and we know his forever family will fall in love with him immediately!

Tigger is 4 years old and has been in our shelter since April. He will need to be the only cat in his household so he can soak up all the love and attention just for himself! If you could be the purr-fect person for Tigger, stop by Women’s Animal Center this week to meet him!

A huge thank you goes out to the local schools and organizations who donated supplies and monetary gifts to Women’s Animal Center during the month of May:

🐾 Students from the Neshaminy High School student council (Neshaminy School District) raised nearly $3000 at their annual Gym Night to support our mission, and also donated homemade enrichment toys for our shelter pets
🐾 Members of Girl Scout Troop 7676 made and donated homemade enrichment toys for our shelter pets as part of their Bronze Award project

We are so grateful for the support we receive from our community! The work we do would not be possible without you! 🧡

Through Guardianship, you can make a profound difference in the lives of animals in need. 🐾🧡

Women’s Animal Center’s Guardianship Program gives animal lovers a way to connect with our shelter pets by helping provide them with food, shelter and medical care while also getting recognition for your support.

For a $230 yearly donation, you can become a guardian and receive your name on our Guardianship Recognition Board, as well as a photo of an adopted pet aided by your generous gift.

Meet Magic, our Shelter Pet of the Week! 🪄

True to his name, this 4 year-old hound/pittie mix is always working on mastering tricks, and will dazzle you with performances of “sit,” “down,” and even climbing the A-frame in the shelter yard! But true performers are multi-talented, which is why Magic has dreams of connecting with his hound roots and being a professional opera singer! While we love and appreciate his craft, he knows not everyone has a taste for arias- so apartment life isn’t for him.

When he’s not rehearsing for his upcoming shows, Magic loves to play outside. He’ll bound through the grass like a bunny, and even roll in it when he’s really having fun! He enjoys having the spotlight but doesn’t mind sharing it too, and is opening to meeting resident pets and children over 12.

Could Magic be the next star of your household? Visit Women’s Animal Center to meet him! 🌟
