Women's Animal Center founded in 1869 - Animal Shelter, Pet Adoptions, Vet Hospital, Community Programs and Dog Training

During the late 1800s, the mistreatment of animals was commonplace and those who defended them were often met with contempt and ridicule. One of their most ardent defenders, Philadelphia native Caroline Earle White, helped to establish and fund the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In spite of her vital role, White was denied a seat on the organization’s board because

she was a woman. So, in 1869, White and her colleagues assembled to form their own association, taking over the Philadelphia City Dog Pound and turning it into the First Animal Shelter and Adoptions Program in the nation – today known as Women’s Animal Center (formerly Women's Humane Society)

Now, 150+ years later, Women's Animal Center, carries on the lifesaving legacy of our founders, committed to making the world an ever kinder, more compassionate place for all animals. Women's Animal Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We receive no federal, state or local funding, and depend upon the support and partnership of animal lovers throughout the United States to sustain and expand our mission.

Meet long-timer Minnie, our Shelter Pet of the Week!

Minnie is a 7 year-old female pittie mix who has been in our care since September 2023. This goofy girl is a favorite among our staff for her happy snorts, her playful personality, and her ability to find toys no matter where we hide them! Minnie loves to play, go for walks, meet new people, and get lots of love and affection from her friends. She is open to meeting children and resident dogs. To sweeten the deal even more, her adoption fee is sponsored by our friends at Doll 10 Beauty, and her adoption also comes with a training package sponsored by one of our volunteers!! 🩷

We love Minnie so much, but it saddens us that she’s been in the shelter so long- especially as a senior dog. If you or someone you know could be Minnie’s perfect fit, stop by our shelter to meet her or help us spread the word!

Calling all young animal lovers! Our next Mini Paws Club session will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 24th-25th from 9 AM-12 PM. Kids ages 7-12 will learn all about pet-friendly holiday traditions at home and around the globe, take a tour of our shelter, and meet an Ambassador Animal! It's sure to be a paw-some day! 🐾

May was a great month for adoptions at Women’s Animal Center! 120 shelter pets found their forever homes, including:

🐾 2 ferrets

🐾 6 rabbits

Meet Bailey, our Shelter Pet of the Week!

This sweet 5 year-old beagle mix takes a little bit of time to warm up to new people, but when she does, her personality is infectious! Bailey LOVES treats and snuggling up with people on the couch. Bailey is a goofy girl who would love to go home with a family that can give her equal parts play time and snuggle time. She is open to meeting resident pets, but would prefer to go to a home without small children due to her shyness.

Stop in this week to meet bubbly Bailey! 🐶
