During the late 1800s, the mistreatment of animals was commonplace and those who defended them were often met with contempt and ridicule. One of their most ardent defenders, Philadelphia native Caroline Earle White, helped to establish and fund the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In spite of her vital role, White was denied a seat on the organization’s board because

she was a woman. So, in 1869, White and her colleagues assembled to form their own association, taking over the Philadelphia City Dog Pound and turning it into the First Animal Shelter and Adoptions Program in the nation – today known as Women’s Animal Center (formerly Women's Humane Society)

Now, 150+ years later, Women's Animal Center, carries on the lifesaving legacy of our founders, committed to making the world an ever kinder, more compassionate place for all animals. Women's Animal Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We receive no federal, state or local funding, and depend upon the support and partnership of animal lovers throughout the United States to sustain and expand our mission.

For our last 2024 Clear the Shelters adoption update, we’re spotlighting Ashley and Dozer, and their story we’ve fallen in love with! 🧡

Ashley worked our 2024 Clear the Shelters event as a member of the Inspire Federal Credit Union team. She went for a walk through the shelter at the beginning of the day, saw Dozer, and knew immediately that she couldn’t leave without him. He ended up being the first adoption of the day!

Ashley shares: “Dozer has changed my life by filling it with love, loyalty, and laughter. He’s my daily reminder to find joy in the little things and to always make time for cuddles. I have a king-size bed, but every night he gently pushes me to the edge so he can stretch out like royalty. I’m just lucky to be his pillow. I adopted Dozer at the Clear the Shelters event almost a year ago, and he’s changed my life in so many positive ways! Whether it’s his excited tail wags when I walk through the door or the way he curls up next to me after a long day, he brings me so much happiness. Adopting him was the best thing for me, and I’d say for Dozer too!”

We’re so grateful to Ashley for giving Dozer his loving forever home, and to Inspire Federal Credit Union for helping us make these adoptions possible. Ready to bring a new pet into your family too? August was a big month for adoptions at Women's Animal Center- especially for rabbits! Last month, 81 shelter animals found their forever homes, including:

🐾 15 dogs

🐾 5 guinea pigs
🐾 1 ferret

Join Women’s Animal Center, Inspire Federal Credit Union, and NBC10 Philadelphia on Saturday, September 6th from 10 AM – 2 PM to help us clear our shelter as part of NBC’s nationwide Clear the Shelters campaign! Adoption fees for all shelter pets will be waived thanks to our friends at Inspire Federal Credit Union.

Meet Phoenix, our Clear the Shelters Pet of the Week!

Phoenix is a 3 year-old male tuxedo cat with a lot of personality! He enjoys being around his people but also values his independence, making him a good and quiet companion to have around. He LOVES playing with cat wands, and playtime makes him act like a kitten!

Meet another one of our 2024 Clear the Shelters adopters who is celebrating one year with their furry family member! Today, we’re spotlighting Amy and her 3 year-old pittie, Cheddar. 🧡

Cheddar spends his days lounging on the couch snuggled up with his humans. He loves playing fetch, snacking on fresh green beans, and cozying up with a blanket.
When asked how Cheddar has changed her and her family’s lives, Amy says, “he was the missing piece of our puzzle. My kiddos have a 4 legged companion and I'm not alone now while they are at school. Having Cheddar by my side brings me a comfort and joy that I previously didn't have. He took a few weeks to settle in and adjust, but change can be hard for anyone. I would adopt this guy a million times over.

Some people say, ‘money can't buy happiness’ and to that, I say, ‘then you've never adopted a pet’ - These 'babies' need us, they deserve love and I promise you with a little patience and time, they will love you more than you could ever imagine. If I could bring then all home, I would.”

Women’s Animal Center is in urgent need of donations of liquid laundry detergent! We go through about one whole bottle of laundry detergent each day, and we are down to our last few bottles. We accept any and all brands and bottle sizes, but can only accept liquid detergents- no pods or powders, please!

Creativity was flowing during our sustainable art Mini Paws Club session this week! Our participants spent two days creating salt dough animal sculptures, painting pet rocks, and making paw print molds with the help of our shelter dogs. 🐾
