BIG day for our guy Tiny. First time being bridled. He was not very cooperative, but we got the job done, even with no steps! He was much better about saddling.

We ponied today down the trail. He looked ant some things a bit, but didn't spook at anything.

He was definitely tired by the time we got back. Once back to the trail head, I got up and legged over. He wasnt to sure about it, but no naughtiness.

He may be crass, but it doesn't mean he's wrong!

Oh Thunder, Thunder, Thunder... today was a huge learning day for our friend Thunder. Previously he didn't want to go forward and with today's ride he didn't want to stop.

He's pulling out all the stops to try and see where his boundaries are. Randomly he will try to take off in a trot or fuss at me when I ask him to stop, bunny hop to try to avoid the bit and decide to walk on once he has stopped all the things that babies do... none of which she has been successful with.

We took the Red Trail today as he has progressed far enough to start doing some additional challenges. We walked over lots of different logs some of which took navigating three limbs while stepping over. He did fantastically he led the whole way but we had to have some repeated discussions when stopping to let our friends catch up.

And then he had "The Event"... there were three deer directly ahead of us and while I asked him to stop he didn't find it necessary and instead of politely stopping to see what it was I was trying to show him he wanted to fuss a bit. When the deer darted out in front of him about 10 ft away he decided that crow hopping bucking and trying to take off was his best course of action. I did pull him out of it and we recovered nicely but he successfully scared the crap out of himself as when we got done he was shaking. He proceeded to lead the way all the way back. No additional naughtiness after his brief scare with death by deer. It was a very productive training ride for Thunder.

Our giant friend here is progressing day by day. He's still afraid of life but he's figuring out that we are following a daily routine. Today we went out without Bailey the security blanket and we added the new stimulus of the ba****ck pad and breast collar. All the exposure is helping him immensely with his confidence.

Even though the heat index is a couple of degrees cooler than Hell, we still get these kids out to keep the momentum going. Charlie was an angel as usual and led the way. I asked her to look at a giant tree stump that she looked at sideways for a minute. No bad behavior whatsoever. I even mounted from the picnic table. She didn't know what I was asking her to do but she was compliant.

While Tiny isn't ready for exposure to saddle pads and the other necessary accoutrements for riding, it doesn't mean we can't set the stage by giving him a broader foundation and exposure with desensitization. He's still getting used to and accustomed to myself and his new surroundings as well as bathing and Grooming. Sometimes it takes them a little while to get with the program. He rode in the trailer to the trailhead, and using Bailey as his security blanket we brought him over to the water and offered him a cool drink as well as some exposure to things around the property which included the scary dumpster. Most of these guys are worked in teams and not knowing his history it was just easier to attempt to piggyback some confidence from Bailey for our giant friend here. Luckily, it worked and he was much more comfortable having Bailey to show him the way. With these youngsters, confidence (human and other horse) consistency, communication, and the relationship we build is what keeps us safe and helps us bloom.
