🐾 TOLEDO PET OWNERS: Keep Your Furry Friends Safe From the Smoke! 🐾

As wildfire smoke from Canada drifts into Northwest Ohio and brings poor air quality to the Toledo area, it is important to remember that our pets breathe the same air we do. Because they are smaller and breathe faster, poor air quality can impact them even quicker than us.

Here are a few quick ways to protect your pets until the haze clears up:

🚪 Keep them indoors: Keep your windows and doors closed. Run your air conditioning on recalculate or use an air purifier to keep your indoor air as clean as possible.
🏃‍♂️ Limit outdoor activity: Skip the long walks at Wildwood or the Toledo public parks for now. Stick to quick potty breaks, especially for senior pets, puppies, and flat-faced breeds like pugs or bulldogs.
💧 Provide extra water: Keep bowls filled with fresh water to help keep their throats hydrated and clear.
👀 Watch for warning signs: Contact your vet immediately if you notice coughing, wheezing, rapid or heavy breathing, watery eyes, or unusual lethargy.

🐾 Is Your Entire Family Prepared for a Fire? Don't Forget Your Pets! 🐾

Fire moves fast, and our beloved pets are often the most vulnerable family members. They can’t open doors, they hide when scared, and they depend entirely on us for their safety.

Here is how you can be ready:

Preparation: Make Them Visible

When firefighters arrive at a smokey scene, every second counts. They need to know immediately if there are pets inside and where they might be.

Action Plan:

Decal Alerts: Place a static-cling 'Pet Alert' decal on your front window or door. It should list the types and number of pets inside.

Microchip: Ensure all pets are microchipped and that your contact information is up to date in the registry.

Escape: Practice the Drill

If a fire breaks out, smoke will obscure vision and panic will set in. Your goal is to get your pets out quickly and safely, avoiding the "scared pet hides" scenario.

Action Plan:

Practice Escapes: When you practice your family fire drill, include the pets. Know which family member is responsible for grabbing the pets.

Leashes & Carriers: Keep leashes near the front door. For small dogs like Yorkies or cats, keep an emergency carrier readily accessible.

In observance of the Fourth of July, Graber’s Animal Hospital will be closing early at noon on Friday, July 3rd.

Keep Your Furry Friends Safe this Summer!

As the temperatures rise, it's essential to ensure your pets are protected from the heat. Here are some critical tips to keep your dogs and cats safe while they enjoy the outdoors:

Always Provide Fresh Water and Shade: Never leave your pets outside for extended periods without access to cool, fresh water and a shady spot to rest.

Avoid Hot Pavement: Asphalt and concrete can quickly burn your pet's paws. Test the surface with the back of your hand; if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them! Walk them early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler.

Never Leave Your Pet in a Parked Car: Even with the windows cracked, temperatures in a car can skyrocket in minutes. Leaving a pet in a vehicle can lead to fatal heatstroke and is illegal in many places.

Know the Signs of Heatstroke: Be vigilant for excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, red gums, and unsteadiness. If you suspect heatstroke, move your pet to a cool area, apply cool (not cold) water to their body, and contact your veterinarian immediately.

By following these simple steps, you can ensure your beloved companions have a happy and healthy summer season.
