Offered attention is a SUPER valuable skill, especially for a dog who is under a year old (like Tilly the lab in this video) but that doesn’t mean that you need to reward your dog any time they look at you. (Unless of course your dog does not offer attention easily)

What I’m helping Tilly’s amazing guardian understand is that when the environment is more distracting, that is when she for sure wants to reward Tilly with a treat for offered attention BUT when the environment is not that distracting, say “good girl” is sufficient.

We wouldn’t hesitate to give our dogs medicine that they needed but when it comes to behavioral medicine people can be so tentative. As a professional dog trainer I have spend my 13 year career working with and dogs I want to normalize using behavior medication because it has honestly improved the lives on SO MANY of my client dogs that we need to shed the stigma! If your dog is struggling, please don’t hesitate to get them the medication they need! It’s not a fix all but a valuable tool in training and behavior modification!

Waylon is a dog who loves people but has had some bad experiences at the vet and does not respond well to restraint. I am so proud of him and the work we have put in to get to this point! Also THANK YOU VET TECHS! You make life just a little bit easier and it is SO appreciated!

Is it that they aren’t food motivated or is it that they are too stressed or the food isn’t the right fit or that they aren’t practiced enough?!

In my experience when the dogs stress and anxiety are managed and we find a good high value treat and we practice over and over again we do in fact have a food motivated dog…

Separation Anxiety is no joke and while I empathize with this owners frustration, this destructive behavior is not a sign of a bad dog, it’s a sign of a dog who is STRUGGLING!

Adolescent dogs are a vibe and not an easy one 😅 I always tell my clients that 6 months to 18 months is my least favorite age range in dogs. THE GOOD NEWS! It gets so much better as their brains grow in! YOU’VE GOT THIS!

Honestly, I’ve been at this almost 14 years and I have never once had a client or case where I felt like using a pinch collar, electric collar or heavy punishment was needed. The humane training movement has been around for DECADES!

Please, please, please do not trust a trainer that tells you the only way is to use “tools” and punishment.

Most dogs are NOT a fan of Halloween and honestly who could blame them!
✅ loud noises
✅ scary costumes
✅ unpredictable kids

This is just a reminder to acknowledge who your dog is and set them up for success! Waylon LOVES kids and crowds which is not the norm so he comes along, Spicy on the other hand is not a fan of kids running and screaming so she stayed home!

Neither of my dogs do well with kids coming to the door so I opted to set candy up closer to the sidewalk to help my dogs keep their cool. 😎

Honestly it kills me to pass the same dogs each day in my neighborhood who’s reactive behaviors could fairly easily be softened but the owners choose to do nothing 🤦🏼‍♀️ if you are already out walking, why not work through the reactive behaviors while you’re at it?!

This is Maple and at just 7 months old she is learning all kinds of new skills. In this clip his guardian is using a technique called splitting where we break the end goal of staying until released at the front door into loads of small achievable steps to set her up for success. Splitting is a technique that works for all dogs regardless of age!
