We all have expectations of what a dog should do. But we forget that our dogs do not come pre-programed. We must teach our dogs to be and do what we desire. Let me help you teach so that you and your dog can share a happy long life together!

Waylon and I have had a scratch board training session every week for the majority of his almost 10 years of life and I can assure you that it’s just as fun as it looks. The noise is terrible , I’ll admit but besides that it’s really enjoyable.

if you want to train your dog how to use the scratch board I have a blog with a training video and ideas for making your own scratch board at home.

As I reflected back as I watched this video it prompted this question in my mind and I think it’s a good reminder that when it comes to
dog sociability
dog play
dog interactions
It is just so dependent on the individual dog and their life and social experiences.

Spicy is a dog who I know has some of the best dogs sociability I’ve ever seen in a dog and she’s a dog who can generalize well and she can read the room so to speak, but I definitely have seen dogs that don’t have that social capacity in my work and a dog like that I would definitely redirect from this behavior so yes and no answer.

Bandit is a real sweetheart! In our first session, he was quite nervous and fearful of me so for our second session, I utilized the help of Spicy because he loves dogs. I am happy to report that Bandit and I are buds now and I’m just so grateful for Spicy, her social ability and how she can help me in some of these client sessions.

Play is often a crucial part of enriching a young dog‘s life and I encourage a lot of play in training sessions. Adolescent dogs need manners trainings for sure but we need to make it fun. We need to give them outlets to be the young dogs that they really are. Because when we can meet their needs and enrich their life with play, they are often much easier to live with and much quicker to respond to our cues.

As if dogs weren’t awesome enough turns out they have an extra organ that we don’t have but a lot of mammals have it and it basically helps them taste smell. It’s pretty fascinating the vomeronasal organ (VNO), or Jacobson’s organ is what’s activated for Spicy here!

I had such a nice time chatting with Ayoka of Ayoka Bubar BA, CPDT-KA, CCUI She enlightened me to the history of her preferred breed the Rottweiler, we talk dog sports, the challenges of herding and how she approaches teaching her human clients to better success.

In all my years working with reactive dogs that is one of the biggest struggles for my clients is that people are obviously judging them and making their lives hard! If you wanna make life easier for dog owners who are trying desperately to work through their dog leash reactivity please send them some love and compassion from across the street and keep it moving.

I will happily vote for an increase in taxes for the school system because I care about the kids and I care about the teachers but I tell you what. As someone with no kids I feel like letting my dogs play at the playground on the weekend is my right 😅

To be honest most of the time when Spicy and Waylon play I really don’t have to intervene, but this is a really good example of a day where I did. I needed to ask Waylon to let go of the hu***ng and redirect to a toy and this is why I do all the training so that in some of these moments, I don’t have to physically intervene and I can just simply ask my dogs to do what I’d like them to do.

The stigma surrounding behavior medication doesn’t exempt dogs.
❌ drugging ✅ giving medication

I’m just here to say that you shouldn’t feel guilty if your dog doesn’t always get to be off leash! These days my dogs don’t get to be off leash that much and that really does not interfere with their ability to live their best lives! So if the best you can do for your dog is a long leash you’re still killing it.
