What you need to know about heatstroke in dogs.

As temperatures rise on warm summer days, your dog is more at risk of developing heatstroke, we've shared below a few of the causes, how can you prevent it and what can you do to help treat an overheated dog. Dogs mostly cool down by panting, but sometimes this just isn’t enough. It is important that you start to cool your dog as soon as possible and contact a vet if needed - this can make a big difference.

Part 3
Springtime Checklist - Prepare

Safety First - while planning outdoor adventures with your dog, be sure you have a dog safety kit to help with common pet-related injuries or emergencies. If hiking over rocky terrain, you can apply paw wax to your dog's paws to protect them from being cut or scratched or dog shoes as an alternative.

Lost or Missing - avoid this scary situation and be sure to have your dog microchipped and wearing clear identification tags.

Leash Laws - know what the leash laws are in the area you'll be exploring. If dogs are allowed off-leash, be sure they respond to your commands and you pick up after them.

Spring is HERE!🌱
Springtime Checklist
Part 2 - Awareness

Active Wildlife - wildlife is just waking up and may be more active in the warmer weather. Keep your dog away from any wild animals. Awareness on wildlife and snakes is the best prevention. Have them on-leash or using an E collar to ensure proper safety.

Unpleasant Surprises - melting snow gives-way to unwanted garbage and unsafe items, be sure to steer your dog away until spring clean-up is completed.

Water Puddles - melted ice and snow creates salty water puddles that can be unsafe for your dog, irritated paws and noses and can also bother the stomach if ingested.

We're sharing Part 1, of our Springtime checklist to help keep your dogs protected.

Part 1 - Health

Fleas and Ticks - warmer weather brings fleas and ticks, annual preventatives is key in this weather. Now is your sign to begin administering them, whether you use popular treatments or combat fleas without chemicals, be sure they are protected.

Say No to Heartworms - warmer weather also brings those pesky mosquitos. Schedule a vet appointment to ensure your dog is heartworm-free and to get prescription preventatives.

Vaccines - make sure your dog is up-to-date on vaccinations and has a clean bill of health.
