🐾 Deaf Dog Awareness Week: Meet Nevaeh! (Nev-aye-uh) One of our adorable Cobblestone patients. 💛 🐾
We asked Nevaeh’s family to tell us about their very special girl. This is her story:
“Nevaeh and her brother were surrendered to AAWL in Phx. They were the only two puppies from their litter who survived, and both were deaf. When they arrived, they were very sick, tiny, and fragile.
After recently losing one of our dogs, I saw Nevaeh on the rescue’s website and immediately thought, “We need to go see her.” We were the first people to meet her, and as soon as they brought her out, she came alive! She was tiny and fragile, but her personality was huge. Within 30 min, we had completely fallen in love and took her home that same day.
Once home, we discovered so many little signs that she was meant to be ours. Her birthday is the same as mine, she entered the shelter on the exact day our other dog passed away, and her birthday is also the same as our soul dog’s, who passed away three years earlier. ❤️
Her Gotcha Day is September 28th, and this year marks one year with Nevaeh!
We don’t do a lot differently for her. We treat her like a normal dog, because that’s exactly what she is. She uses a bell to tell us when she needs to go outside and has learned basic sign language like “sit,” “come here,” and “kisses.” She also understands our movements, expressions, and body language.
Her five canine siblings have helped her learn, too. She relies on her other senses, especially vibration, to stay aware of what’s happening around her.
Don’t let the word “deaf” make you think a dog is limited. Nevaeh doesn’t know she’s different. She plays, gets into trouble, gets excited for treats, loves her people, and lives her life just like any other dog.
Her family’s advice for anyone considering a deaf pet? “Do it! Don’t overlook the dog who can’t hear. They may just be the one who changes your life!” ❤️🐾
