Invisible Crowns

It was a typical Florida morning in July, heavy with heat and silence. He moved slowly, nearly blending into the hum of daily life—just another figure on the sidewalk. His beard, gray and disheveled, his silver-braided dreads, his tired gait—all marked him as someone the world had stopped noticing. Perhaps he felt invisible. Or perhaps, invisibility had become his refuge.

But not to the little dog trotting proudly by his side.

With short legs and matted black-and-white fur, the pup carried himself like royalty—regal and radiant in his stride. He wasn’t just walking; he was announcing. “This man is mine”. Each prance was a declaration, as if he were escorting a king. The contrast was striking: the dignity of devotion set against the weathered weariness of a man long forgotten by society.

And then, it became clear. This little creature wasn’t just loyal—he was a mirror. Reflecting to the world the worth it failed to see. The bond between them wasn’t decorative. It was divine.

“Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” — Hebrews 13:2

Scripture gently reminds us that value is not always visible. That royalty may walk in rags. That the greatest crowns are not made of gold, but of grace, love, and shared suffering. It’s in the unnoticed corners of our cities—beneath braided dreads and fraying collars—that dignity quietly lives. And sometimes, it takes a dog to lift the veil.

On Wednesday morning, 7/16, our day was unfolding as usual with surgery drop-offs and scheduled appointments. That calm was broken when a distraught client rushed in carrying Ginny, a 10-week-old Dachshund puppy we had recently seen for her vaccine series. Ginny had been attacked by her much larger housemate and arrived with traumatic lacerations, presenting in shock and nearly comatose.

In a matter of seconds, Liz (our CSR/assistant) ushered the owner and Ginny into the treatment area, where Dr. Meredith, Dr. Simpson, and our surgical team—Becca and Miranda—rose to the challenge. Ginny was immediately placed on oxygen and intubated. Crystal, a skilled tech from TBVS, happened to be in the clinic that morning dropping off her pups, Potato and Roux, for dental procedures. Without hesitation, she jumped in and assisted our team with expert support.

Together, the team stabilized Ginny and repaired her ear lacerations. Chest radiographs revealed pulmonary contusions, and she was quickly transferred to TBVS for continued care under the guidance of Dr. Weaner and their incredible team.

This seamless coordination across Saint Francis and TBVS saved Ginny’s life. The ultimate reward? Seeing a vibrant puppy wagging her tail—and witnessing the tears of joy in her mom’s eyes as she brought her beloved pup back home.

I’m deeply grateful to be part of such an exceptional network of compassionate, skilled professionals who show every day what it means to work with heart and purpose.
