April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month.

This month and always, we encourage advocates to learn how they can stand against cruelty to cats, and explain to decision-makers that animal cruelty must be taken extremely seriously and penalized to the fullest extent of the law.

Riggs is one step closer to becoming Gilmer County Fire Rescue's first therapy dog. This good boy works really well under pressure, he was one of multiple pups rescued during a house fire that killed his owner.

Lieutenant Riggs (Gilmer County Fire Department's newest recruit) is in need of a kennel.

In January of this year Gilmer County Fire Rescue responded to a house fire that resulted in a fatality and a homeless dog.

If it weren’t for the compassion of Katherine Evans and the Gilmer County Fire Department this dog would have ended up at the Gilmer County Shelter or worse.

Katherine Evans and the Gilmer County Fire Department took this dog in, gave him an honorary name & rank (Lieutenant Riggs), and made him their official department mascot.

Since Lt. Riggs rescue, Friends Of Gilmer Animal Shelter (FOGAS) has funded Lieutenant Riggs neuter and vaccinations.
Sharon Callan of Paws Be Good For U has started free training for Lt. Riggs so he can achieve his full potential as a Gilmer County public servant and first responder.

Katherine Evans needs a large outdoor welded kennel at her home to keep Lt. Riggs safe until he is fully trained and while she is on duty protecting Gilmer County.

We just learned about this today! Please do NOT call our office if your pet was chipped: Instead you can look it up at https://www.aaha.org/for-veterinary-professionals/microchip-search/ .... but check your paperwork to see who your pet is chipped to and look into calling the company and either moving your registration over to a new company or updating your information if you aren't a STL chip owner. Please share! Your pets microchip is like your ID or drivers license, its very important!! ( This pic is not our but borrowed)
