This week's Happy Tail is from Carmilla and Janie! 🐾
After losing their beloved shop cat Herbert in 2022, Kings Books decided they were ready to begin the search for new feline booksellers in 2025.
In March 2025, they visited Catffeinated, where Tacoma Humane had cats available for adoption, to see if they could find the right matches with cats who already had “customer service” experience on their resumes.
“The soon-to-be-named Carmilla came out from the backroom and chose us. When we asked her who she wanted as a co-worker, she hissed at one candidate and put her paw on soon-to-be-named Janie's head.”
Once their adoption was finalized, they adapted to bookstore life pretty quickly. As a welcome, King’s Books hosted a naming contest for them. Carmilla was fittingly named for the original literary vampire and Janie from the heroine of 'Their Eyes Were Watching God'.
“Carmilla is a diva and usually social, gifting lucky customers with pools of drool when she's happy. Her favorite music to dance to is the girl group sound. Janie is a little more elusive, but very sweet and loves to help us with tasks, occupies any empty shelf, and is a mean soccer player.”
For over a year, Carmilla and Janie have been assisting King’s Books clients in finding new reads and being adorable while doing it! If you’d like to stop in to see them, King’s Books is open every day from 11 a.m. -7 p.m. (Carmilla and Janie may or may not be available at times, depending on their work breaks and mood).
