🚨 𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝚁𝚊𝚗𝚌𝚑 𝙷𝚘𝚛𝚜𝚎 𝚂𝚑𝚘𝚠 𝚂𝚞𝚛𝚟𝚒𝚟𝚊𝚕 𝙺𝚒𝚝 🚨
𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝟏: 𝐒𝐨 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐰… 𝐍𝐨𝐰 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭?
You entered the show. You practiced at home. Your horse is (hopefully!) prepared.
But then you get there and realize there are about 𝟒𝟕 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮. 🫣
Welcome to the 𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝚁𝚊𝚗𝚌𝚑 𝙷𝚘𝚛𝚜𝚎 𝚂𝚑𝚘𝚠 𝚂𝚞𝚛𝚟𝚒𝚟𝚊𝚕 𝙺𝚒t— a new series covering the little rules, etiquette, preparation, and show-pen knowledge that can make your first few ranch shows a whole lot less intimidating.
For Part 1, let’s start with a few things to know 𝙗𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙜𝙖𝙩𝙚.
🐴 𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐂𝐊 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐓𝐀𝐂𝐊 𝐁𝐄𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐃𝐀𝐘
Just because you ride in it at home doesn’t automatically mean it’s legal for your class. Most western saddles, headstalls, and breast collars are pretty straightforward, but 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐢𝐭, 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥 & 𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐩 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤.
And don’t forget: how you hold those reins matters, too. Snaffle vs. curb, one hand vs. two hands, split reins vs. romals — there are rules for all of it. Crack open that rulebook or ask a professional for help!
🐴 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐍 — 𝐃𝐎𝐍’𝐓 𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐌𝐄𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐙𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐈𝐂𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄
Study it ahead of time and, whenever possible, 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭. Look around the actual arena and pick out landmarks you can ride toward. Maybe your extended trot starts at a particular banner. Your transition happens at the end of a gate. Your circle needs to hit a certain spot in the arena.
Knowing where you’re going lets you concentrate on showing your horse instead of desperately trying to remember what comes next.
🐴 𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐒𝐇 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐍, 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐊𝐄𝐄𝐏 𝐑𝐈𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆.
One of those tiny things new exhibitors don’t always know: when you finish, 𝒅𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝒊𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒚 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒑 𝒂𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒋𝒖𝒅𝒈𝒆. 👀 Finish your maneuver, let your horse settle, then exit calmly or as your pattern directs. You do not have to nod or wait to be dismissed; your judge is probably busy reviewing your last couple of scores with their scribe the moment you finish your last maneuver.
🐴 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐃𝐎𝐄𝐒𝐍’𝐓 𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐓𝐎 𝐁𝐄 𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐅𝐄𝐂𝐓
You’re probably going to make a mistake. Your horse might make one too.
That’s okay.
A successful first show isn’t necessarily the one where you bring home the most ribbons. It’s the one where you leave understanding 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒅𝒊𝒅 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒅— and with a horse that’s a little more prepared for the next one.
And that’s exactly why we’re making this series.
We’ll be covering everything from 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰-𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐦-𝐮𝐩 𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲, 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩, 𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐱𝐡𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰.
📌 SAVE this series if you’re getting started in the ranch events — and send it to the friend you’re trying to convince to come show with you.
👀 NEXT UP: 🚨 𝚂𝚞𝚛𝚟𝚒𝚟𝚊𝚕 𝙺𝚒𝚝 𝙿𝚊𝚛𝚝 𝟸 — “𝙸𝚜 𝙼𝚢 𝚃𝚊𝚌𝚔 𝙰𝚌𝚝𝚞𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚢 𝙻𝚎𝚐𝚊𝚕?” 🚨
We’re getting into bits, reins, one hand vs. two hands, split reins vs. romals, and some surprisingly easy ways to get yourself in trouble before you’ve even shown your horse.
👇🏼𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰?
Drop it in the comments — we might add it to the Survival Kit!
