Okay, let's get this straight. I have never guaranteed that any puppies I produce will be completely free of Shar-Pei Autoinflammatory Disease (SPAID), not even those that are guaranteed non-carriers of the gene for SPAID. This is why our non-carrier puppies still come with a comprehensive 5-year health guarantee. For those of you who are unaware or uncertain, it is important to acknowledge that predicting the absence of SPAID in this breed is impossible. A non-carrier for SPAID only signifies that the dog does not possess either copy of the gene responsible for SPAID. It does NOT, and will NEVER, guarantee that a Shar Pei will not develop SPAID. As detrimental as it is, SPAID will persist in this breed unless strict efforts are made across multiple generations for decades to breed only non-carriers. With responsible breeding practices, breeders can drive positive change over time. By prioritizing the health of the breed, we can work towards a future where SPAID is significantly reduced. Unfortunately, this is unlikely to occur, as not all individuals prioritize the breed's health to the same extent. Now that being said, this is genetics we are talking about; it is essential to acknowledge that anything is possible, yet nothing is guaranteed.
