Just a reminder: possums, raccoons, and skunks don’t hibernate. In cold weather, they look for sheltered places to stay warm, and it’s completely normal to see them moving around in winter. If they rest near your home, it’s okay to let them be—they’re simply trying to survive the season.

If the weather is severe, (freezing temps for days and lots of snow) and you’d like to help, you can leave out a small amount of appropriate food, such as fruits or regular dog or cat food. Avoid processed meats or anything heavily seasoned. Fresh water placed low to the ground can also make a big difference, since natural sources often freeze.

Please remember, helping wildlife doesn’t mean drawing them close to your home or encouraging them to rely on people. Simply giving them safe space and occasional support during extreme cold is enough.

These animals play an important role in the ecosystem. Opossums, in particular, are known for eating ticks and other pests that we’d rather not have around.

All life matters—and a little understanding goes a long way in helping our wild neighbors get through winter safely. 🤍

✨ Some dogs come into the shelter and get noticed right away. And then… there are the quiet souls like her — the ones who watch families walk past their kennel day after day, hoping maybe this time someone will stop and see her gentle heart.

She’s a sweet, calm senior girl who has so much love left to give. She walks beautifully on a leash, adores soft beds, offers the sweetest little tail wags, and melts into anyone who gives her even a moment of attention. She gets along with people of ALL ages and does wonderfully** with CATS & DOGS who match her easygoing energy. ✨

🚨🚒 💔URGENT COMMUNITY SUPPORT NEEDED 🚨HOUSE FIRE – 40–50 CATS AFFECTED 💔🚒

A local community has been shaken by a heartbreaking tragedy. A devastating house fire occurred at a home where an estimated 40–50 cats were living. Some of these precious souls tragically perished in the fire… but many survived and scattered in fear.

In the middle of this crisis, Loudoun Community Cat Coalition has stepped up in an extraordinary way. Volunteers have been working around the clock to safely trap the surviving cats, provide urgent medical care, and begin TNR efforts to ensure the remaining cats are no longer at risk of future suffering.

But they cannot do this alone. 🙏🏻

These cats—burn victims, scared strays, fragile survivors—need all of us right now. Medical costs, emergency supplies, spay/neuter surgeries, and safe temporary housing are adding up quickly.

Every single dollar truly matters.

💔 Some cats didn’t make it. Others are fighting to survive.

💛 Together, we can give these survivors a chance at safety, healing, and a better life.
