Miracle dog, “Romeo”, came into Sterling Park Animal Hospital today and is doing great! But, Romeo not be with us, except for the quick action of caring people. Last Tuesday, while playing with his little brother, “Sly“, and other dogs at a local daycare facility, Romeo went into cardiac arrest. The daycare staff said he collapsed and became stiff. Thankfully, an off-duty veterinary assistant was apparently working at the daycare and came to his aid, administering CPR and getting him transferred to Animal Emergency & Critical Care in Leesburg. It was not immediately apparent that he would be saved. After apparently recovering from his first cardiac arrest, he enters another while in the doctor’s care! Thanks to all for their rolls in saving one of our favorite patients!

Thank you for the wonderful donations to Loudoun Pet Pantry! We’re so proud to be a collection center and proud of our clients, who have really stepped-up during the partial government shut down - donating small bags of food and other items to help those in need to care for our beloved pets! Remember, the need continues even now that the government is opening up. So, keep the donations coming! (Megan, our receptionist, poses with Pat, a Loudoun Pet Pantry volunteer, as they transfer food bags.)

With this post, we simply want to thank the anonymous donor for their $55 contribution, which we will match dollar-for-dollar for a total of $110 that will be placed into the fund and used to help offset the costs of care for needy individuals in our wonderful community. Thanks!

This morning Julie and Amber arrived to a pleasant surprise! An anonymous good Samaritan stopped by and left a donation for our Wayward Animal Fund. This fund is one of the many ways by which we help the less fortunate members of our community who struggle to afford their pets healthcare.

Dr. Eastin is thrilled to congratulate our very own Madison upon her acceptance into the NOVA Veterinary Technology program! (http://www.nvcc.edu/LOUDOUN/divisions/natural/vettech/index.html) Madison has served Sterling Park Animal Hospital since 2016 as a Receptionist and Veterinary Assistant. She has always loved animals and has decided to devote her life to caring for them. After she completes the Veterinary Technology program, she will be eligible for licensure as a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT). We are very fortunate to have her on our team.
Great job, Madison!

Our lost dog's name is "Cocoa"!
Her mother, Emily, called me this morning and confirmed that this is her very beloved dog! She authorized us to place a microchip under Cocoa's skin, which will help reunite them sooner in case Cocoa roams again. Cocoa's dad, Stephen, just left the hospital a few minutes ago to take Cocoa home to the family.
Thanks to all of you who helped us reunite this family, especially Durell for finding Cocoa and caring enough to bring her to us!
Please "like" us on Facebook and continue to follow our posts!
Sincerely,
Dr. Eastin

Photos from Sterling Park Animal Hospital's post

This dog has an "Ace-in-the-Hole" with his family, which is why they are the Sterling Park Animal Hospital Client-of-the-Month! We have so many excellent clients, who really care about their pets and make our lives so very enjoyable by entrusting us with their care. Here is yet another example that.

"Ace" started vomiting and when it didn't subside after a few days, Ace's family brought him to see us at Sterling Park Animal Hospital.

Using ultrasound and x-ray technology, we were quickly able to identify the presence of some "foreign body" in the intestines. We couldn't tell what the foreign body was, but we knew that it needed to be surgically removed. The only way to save Ace's life was through a surgical procedure into the abdomen to physically remove the foreign body. By the time he arrived at the hospital, he was already showing systemic symptoms of the presence of the foreign body. Once we diagnosed the problem and stabilized him, we took him to surgery and removed from the small intestines a block of fibrous material. While the intestines down-stream were neutral colored and calm, the upstream intestines were red and angry from Ace's body trying to force the foreign body through the intestines. Dr. Eastin sutured the intestinal incision, the body wall, and the skin.

After surgery, Ace remained in the hospital for a few days to received medication and intravenous fluids to prevent infection, keep blood pressure up and maximize blood supply to support this critical stage in the healing process. It was several days before we could say with confidence that Ace was "out of the woods" and on the road to recovery.

After further discussion's with Ace's family, we determined that this material was a small corn cob that Ace had consumed many days prior. The digestive enzymes had made the corn cob practically unrecognizable, but had not digested it!

This seemingly insignificant "dietary indiscretion" could have been the end of Ace except for the love and devotion of The Sterling Park Animal Hospital Client(Family!)-of-the-Month!

Who knew that we, as a community, have such a wonderful resource right in our backyard?! The Northern Virginia Community College Veterinary Technology Program trains veterinary technician students from Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and beyond. And their wonderful facility is located right here in Sterling, Virginia. Dr. Eastin and Greg attended the school's open house on Thursday evening and met some of the excellent students and staff. They had booths and exhibits set up to educate attendees about horses, anatomy, parasites, hematology, surgery, and more! For anyone who loves animals and wants to dedicate their lives to the loving care and treatment of animals, the NOVA Veterinary Technology Program should definitely be considered.
