An Update on a Community Stray

There were so many comments. So much concern on social media about this dog—people asking why animal control or a rescue wasn’t helping.

This stray had a name.
Her name was Emmy.

We took her in. We gave her a name, and we loved her.

Emmy had a very large, hard mammary mass. It was diagnosed as aggressive cancer that had already spread to other organs in her thin, frail body.

With all the attention Emmy received on social media, we hoped that maybe someone would step forward and offer her a hospice foster home.
Unfortunately, this time, there were no comments. No offers. No one stepping forward to give her a home.

Emmy would stand up and look at you through the bars of her kennel with those big brown eyes, just hoping you would say something to her, touch her paw, or maybe give her a treat.

Friends Rescue wanted to pull her and give her a few days, maybe a week, in a home with a soft bed, love, and kindness.
But no one offered her that day, that week, or that love.

Until one of our fosters stepped up.

She had recently cared for another hospice dog. She wasn't sure if she was ready to do it again, but she wanted to do this for Emmy.

And Emmy had an incredible eight days.
She went on car rides.
She played with other dogs.
She enjoyed ice cream.
And her absolute favorite thing was peanut butter.
But the next best thing?
Tennis balls.
Emmy would play fetch, and when she was finished, she could somehow remove the skin from a tennis ball in one perfect piece. It was pretty amazing to watch.

She couldn't play for long. Her body was tired, and each day became a little harder for her.
But because one of our exhausted fosters said yes, Emmy got to know what a soft bed felt like.
She got to feel love.
She got to feel kindness.
She got to be part of a family.
Even if it was only for eight days.

Emmy passed peacefully with her foster and members of Friends Rescue by her side.

Someone asked us why we went through so much trouble to do this for a dog.
Our answer was simple:
We asked them why they wouldn't.

Every animal deserves to know love, even if we only get a short time with them.

Our shelters are overwhelmed.
Our rescues are exhausted.
Our fosters are stretched thin.
But there are still animals like Emmy who need someone willing to say yes.

If you have ever thought about becoming a hospice foster, please reach out to Friends Rescue. You don't have to know how to do everything. You just have to be willing to give an animal comfort, dignity, and love as we walk them home.

Sunday Pupdate! ☺️

Hello!! I just wanted to provide a Sunday pupdate on Rafe (adopted 08/19/23).

Rafe has been part of our family for just over three years now (08/19/23) and we love everything about him.

He's the sweetest, wiggliest love bug who loves to cuddle and eat ALLL the treats 😆. When he's not too busy napping in our laps, you can always find him laying outside in the sun, no matter the temperature and even taking a few conference calls!

We're so glad Rafe is part of our family, we'd be lost without him.

OPEN 9-1 today

Imagine living in a quiet home one day… and the next, finding yourself in a loud, chaotic shelter.

That’s what happened to Bo.

Bo is a beautiful Cattle Dog who can be pretty vocal in his kennel. But please don’t judge him by what you see there.

He’s overwhelmed, confused, and doesn’t understand why his world has suddenly changed.

Once Bo gets outside and away from the noise, he settles down and you get to see the sweet boy underneath it all.

We don’t want to focus on why he is in the kennel.

We want to focus on Bo !
A handsome, loving Cattle Dog who deserves a family of his own.

Please come out and meet him. Give Bo the chance to show you who he really is.

He’s waiting for someone to see past the shelter stress and see the wonderful dog he can be.

Foster Friday! 🥰

☕️ Coffee with Laney ☕️

Laney is still waiting for her forever family.

This sweet girl came into Animal Control as a stray and was in pretty rough shape. The chaotic shelter environment was incredibly scary for her, and she was absolutely terrified.

When Laney first arrived at her foster home, she was timid and unsure. But with a little love, patience, and kindness, she slowly began to realize she was safe. And once she felt safe… her sweet, silly personality started to shine.

Laney is approximately 7 years old, dachshund/schnauzer mix

She loves going on walks
She does well on car rides
She gets VERY excited about food
She loves to cuddle beside you
She'll happily give you kisses
After some cuddles, she may suddenly pounce on you because it's PLAY TIME!
She is kennel trained
She is potty trained

Laney is still a little timid when she hears a loud or unexpected noise, but she recovers well. She just needs someone who understands that trust takes time and who will continue showing her that the world can be a safe and wonderful place.

I truly believe Laney would make an amazing companion for someone who is willing to give her love, kindness, patience, and a good routine.

Foster Friday! 🙌

Who remembers this handsome boy? 🐾❤️

Finn is our sweet senior gentleman who, through no fault of his own, lost everything — his family, his home, and even his little canine companion.

His legs and feet were raw and sore here at the shelter and he was struggling with a lot of anxiety in his kennel.

It was heartbreaking to see a senior boy who had already lost so much feeling so scared and alone.

Thankfully, a wonderful family stepped up to foster Finn and gave him something he desperately needed: a safe place to heal, decompress, and heal.

Finn deserves nothing less than a forever family who will love him for the rest of his days.

This is from his foster family-

Finn is a big boy with a big heart! He is content to sit on the couch and cuddle up with his people. This dog is SUPER low maintenance, he is fully potty trained and will tell you when he is ready to go out. We have left him out and about when we go to work and he does not chew on anything or have any accidents. He would do well in a house with other dogs as long as they are chill like him, we have two other senior dogs and they get along well. He is so happy to be out of the shelter and in a home, now he would love to find his forever family.
