🖤🐾 A senior dog should leave this world knowing love, not loneliness. Adopting them may break your heart, but it saves theirs.

Most mammals can’t survive on seawater. Drink too much of it, and the salt overload becomes dangerous.

Cats, however, are one of the rare exceptions. Their kidneys are remarkably efficient, able to filter out salt from seawater. This allows them to stay hydrated by drinking it, something humans and many other animals can’t do.

In the wild, this adaptation makes sense. Cats evolved as desert animals, often living in places where fresh water was scarce. Their bodies learned to conserve every drop, producing highly concentrated urine to hold on to as much hydration as possible.

For domestic cats today, it means they’re naturally equipped to handle situations where only salty water is available. That doesn’t mean they should be given saltwater to drink, but it shows just how extraordinary their biology really is.

It’s a small glimpse into why cats have thrived for so long. They may seem delicate, but their bodies carry hidden strengths that help them adapt and endure in the harshest environments.

If your cat is suddenly avoiding the litter box, it may be more than just a behavior issue.

Changes in litter box habits can be early signs of urinary tract infections, bladder inflammation, or even kidney problems.

A veterinary exam can help identify the cause and ensure your cat gets the care they need.

09/04/2025

The general rule of thumb is to have one litter box for each cat, plus one extra. If you have two cats in your home, it is recommended to have three litter boxes. For more litter box tips, visit https://bit.ly/3J5MlXy.

Depending on where you live, taking your bird on walks outside can be a very rewarding experience. This can be done by training your bird to wear a harness using positive reinforcement or by using a backpack-style travel carrier. Providing birds the opportunity to go outside will expose them to fresh air, natural sunlight, and many new sights and sounds!

If your birds are not flight-trained or there is a concern for predators, please ensure your bird remains on a harness or in a portable cage. No harness is “escape-proof,” so supervision is always necessary during outdoor adventures to ensure your pet remains safe.

Be sure to avoid any potential contact with wild birds and be aware of the status of high path avian influenza in your area to keep your birds safe.

Special thanks to Sydney Duncan-Ford, Ontario Veterinary College, Class of 2026 for sharing this tip and photos of her bird.
