Did you know dexmedetomidine can cause ultrasound changes that mimic right-sided congestive heart failure (R-CHF)?

While teaching Global FAST® at the SOUND Academy (2011–2014), Dr. Lisciandro observed how dexmedetomidine sedation could make the caudal vena cava (CVC) appear “FAT” and distended with minimal respiratory variation — a phenomenon also seen in hepatic venous distention (aka the “Tree Trunk Sign”).

This finding, later echoed in published research by Dr. Marc Seitz, DABVP, DACVR, highlights the importance of recognizing drug-induced ultrasound artifacts to avoid misdiagnosis.
