Did you know dexmedetomidine can cause ultrasound changes that mimic right-sided congestive heart failure (R-CHF)?

While teaching Global FASTĀ® at the SOUND Academy (2011–2014), Dr. Lisciandro observed how dexmedetomidine sedation could make the caudal vena cava (CVC) appear ā€œFATā€ and distended with minimal respiratory variation — a phenomenon also seen in hepatic venous distention (aka the ā€œTree Trunk Signā€).

This finding, later echoed in published research by Dr. Marc Seitz, DABVP, DACVR, highlights the importance of recognizing drug-induced ultrasound artifacts to avoid misdiagnosis.
