Vinny presented to SVC experiencing continuous vomiting, severe pain, and his stomach was hard to the touch. Upon arrival Dr.Bennett was able to quickly obtain X-Rays which showed that Vinny had BLOAT.
GDV - Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus, is commonly referred to as BLOAT. This is a serious condition in dogs where the stomach becomes distended with gas, food, or fluid and then twists on itself. This twisting blocks blood flow to vital organs and is a life-threatening emergency.
Vinny underwent emergency surgery for a gastropexy, this is where Dr.Bennett de-rotated the stomach, and then sutured Vinny’s stomach to the abdominal muscles which will prevent GDV from occurring again, restoring oxygen and blood flow to vital organs. While GDV / BLOAT are most commonly seen in large breed dogs, this can also be found in any patient with a broad and or deep chest cavity.
