Perry came to see us for a non-healing wound and firm swelling on his front leg. Dr. Elise diagnosed the wound as actually being a type of cancer called soft tissue sarcoma. This type of cancer is common in dogs and cats and most often occurs in the skin and under the skin. Removal of the tumor with wide margins of healthy tissue can cure the disease. However, Perry's tumor was on his leg and this area is very difficult to address surgically. In order to completely remove the tumor, amputation was chosen. Dr. Ankrom amputated the Perry's front limb to treat the tumor. 24 hours later Perry was walking around the treatment room in his surgery sweater like nothing had happened.

Dogs and cats regain normal walking ability surprisingly quickly after amputation of one limb. Amputation can be life saving in cases of cancer or even severe limb trauma. Perry's pathology report came back that his tumor was removed completely and he should be able to continue living his best cat life with his new tripod stance!
