Well, it’s not winter yet, so it must still be road construction season!
Over the next 6-8 weeks, old U.S. 31 in front of the clinic will be “milled and repaved”. This means lane restrictions and lots of orange cones! Please be patient and watch for road workers and other vehicles when arriving and leaving the clinic. We’ve survived this before, we can do it again!
Happy Labor Day!

Meet Simon, a small bulldog mix and proud member of the “brachycephalic” family — short-faced breeds like French Bulldogs, Pugs, Shih Tzus, Boston Terriers, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.
These breeds often have elongated soft palates and narrowed nostrils, which make breathing — and cooling down — much harder, especially in summer heat.

Did you know?

◾ Brachycephalic breeds are more than twice as likely to develop heat stroke as other dogs.
◾ Dogs can’t sweat — panting is their main way to cool down, but brachycephalics have a harder time doing it efficiently.

Tips to help keep them safe in the heat:
☑️ Stick to shade whenever possible
☑️ Provide fresh, cool water
☑️ Use a stroller for longer adventures to prevent fatigue
☑️ Use fans or cooling devices to help them breathe easier

Let’s keep our flat-faced friends safe and happy all summer long!

Warning for Pet Owners – Death Cap Mushrooms Have Been Identified

Amanita phalloides, also known as the “Death Cap,” has appeared in yards and fields across central Indiana. These mushrooms typically emerge between July and November and can be deadly to dogs of all sizes—even with prompt treatment.

They look very similar to harmless mushrooms and can only be identified accurately by an expert. Ingesting them can cause severe liver and kidney damage within 24–48 hours and may be fatal.

If your dog eats a mushroom, contact a veterinarian immediately. Don’t wait—early intervention is critical.

The Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL) at Purdue University offers toxicology testing for suspected cases involving mushrooms, nitrates, cyanide, and blue-green algae.
