Euthanasia
Not a topic most wish to talk about. It’s a part of my job. Sometimes more than once in a day.
Euthanasia is defined as the intentional, painless act of ending an animal's life to relieve persistent, incurable suffering.
Here are some things I’d like you to know:
1). Euthanasia will be for most of us, a when choice and not a whether. The act of dying is painful in most situations save a very small percent. If you are unable to make sure that your pet is prevented from measurable pain than the choice will be when.
2). Using appetite as a quality of life tool is not effective in itself. Eating is necessary for survival and an animal will eat even when they do not feel well or are in pain.
3). Waiting for someone else to tell you that you need to help your pet cross the bridge can be waiting for a crisis. Most of our pets will decline slowly until they can’t and then it can be a rapid urgent need for relief.
4). Allowing a natural death is often not peaceful. Most pet deaths are tragic more than peaceful.
5). Having your pet euthanized during an emergency visit at 2 AM is not how most families would prefer.
6). Many families say that they waited too long.
7). Guilt can get in the way of making the tough, the hard, and the braver decision. Being there for your pet when they need release from their suffering is hard.
8. Pets live for each day, as if it is the only one they are given. They are not looking for the next holiday, the next birthday, or the next season.
9). When you choose humane euthanasia for your pet, you are not giving up. You are making the hard and brave choice to step in for your pet so they do not suffer.
10). Saying goodbye is not easy, but it can be one of the most loving gifts you can provide to a pet that loved you as if you were the only human on earth.
I believe that on the other side of this life, the pets that we have loved whether directly in our homes or hopefully some of those that I’ve known over decades, I will get to greet again on the other side. It warms my heart and touches my soul more than most will ever understand when you allow me to stand in the presence of your very private moment and help your pet pass over.
I will always do my best to make that moment as easy for your pet as possible.
