A new study in JAVMA finds a correlation between early spay/neuter (3 - 6 months) with overweight/obesity in some large breeds, especially Labradors and golden retrievers of both s*xes. Small breeds were not affected, and the results varied by s*x in boxers, bulldogs and German Shepherds.

Food for thought, hey? Kudos to the authors for doing this study; it is just one study, always reason for caution, but it’s a large sample size (over 200,000 dogs) and deserves attention.

Rayanne is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed, an Accredited Dog Trainer through the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, a Family Dog Mediator, and a Fear Free Certified Professional (Trainer). She is currently pursuing a graduate certificate in Applied Animal Behavior through the University of Washington.
Rayanne has been working with dogs in some capacity since she was 10 years old! She has worked professionally as a force free trainer for 4 years and in that time earned several certifications. She lives in Sumrall, Mississippi, with her dog, Kávé, a Mudi. Her passion is puppies! She loves helping owners set their puppies up for success and enjoy the benefits of a positive relationship. She loves working with both baby puppies and with “naughty” teenager pups as she currently has one of those herself! Her goal is to educate pet parents and to show them they can have a wonderful time training and building a bond with their dogs through positive reinforcement. She has worked as a Veterinary Technician and is an accomplished service dog trainer. Rayanne has worked professionally with service dogs and their handlers for over 3 years. She has helped train for several different tasks including: Type 1 diabetic alert, anxiety interruption, deep pressure therapy, retrieval, and some hearing alerts. She has worked with puppies who are service dogs in training until they are fully trained adult dogs, and helped already trained adult service dogs fine tune or add on additional tasks. Service dogs can greatly improve the lives of their handlers and Rayanne loves helping them become great, working teams.
