💎 A Day in the Life with Momma Gracie 💎
The First 48 Hours
The first two days after whelping are beautiful... but they're also nonstop.
Gracie doesn't want to leave her babies for more than a moment, so I bring everything to her. Every meal is hand-fed. Fresh water is brought right to her. We carefully move each puppy just long enough to clean bedding and freshen up their nursery before they're tucked safely back against Momma.
Nighttime bathroom breaks are frequent because Momma still needs to take care of herself, even if she'd rather never leave the whelping box.
She's also still experiencing normal post-birth discharge, so we're constantly helping keep her clean, dry, and comfortable while making sure every puppy is nursing, warm, and gaining strength.
But the work goes beyond feeding and cleaning.
Every puppy is weighed daily to ensure they're growing exactly as they should. I watch each nursing session to make sure everyone gets equal access and that no puppy is falling behind. I monitor Gracie's temperature, appetite, hydration, and recovery around the clock because healthy puppies begin with a healthy mother.
The whelping area is kept meticulously clean to reduce bacteria and give these newborns the safest possible environment while their immune systems are still developing.
The first 48 hours set the foundation for everything that follows. It's where tiny changes are noticed before they become problems, and where countless small decisions make a lifelong difference.
People often see the adorable puppy pictures. What they don't always see are the sleepless nights, the alarms every few hours, the constant observation, and the commitment to doing every little thing possible to give each puppy the very best start.
For me, this has never been about producing puppies.
It's about preserving a breed, honoring every life we bring into this world, and raising them with purpose from the very first breath.🐾❤️
