Immunization plays a vital role in preventing infectious diseases in animals, just as it does in humans.

As the heat index countinus to rise in our area here are some things you need to be aware of.

How to know if your pet is overheated, watch for excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or bright red gums. Other signs include rapid breathing, vomiting, or diarrhea. If you notice these symptoms, especially in hot weather, seek veterinary care immediately, as overheating can be dangerous.

Early Signs:

Excessive Panting:
If your pet is panting more heavily than usual, or struggling to breathe, it could be a sign of overheating.

Drooling:
Excessive drooling, especially thick or ropey saliva, can indicate heat stress.

Bright Red Gums:
Healthy gums are typically pink. Bright red gums or tongue can be a warning sign.

Lethargy or Weakness:
A normally active pet may suddenly become sluggish or weak, which could be due to overheating.

Restlessness or Agitation:
Some pets may become restless or agitated when they are too warm.

As of today, July 21, 2025, Missouri is experiencing a dangerous and prolonged heatwave expected to last through at least Thursday, July 24. An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for much of the state, particularly the central, east central, south central, southwest, and west central portions.

High temperatures and humidity poses a serious risk to dogs, cats and other household animals.
Limiting outdoor activity during peak heat hours, ensuring pets have access to fresh water and shade, and keeping them indoors as much as possible.
Brachycephalic breeds like bulldogs and pugs are especially susceptible to overheating due to their shortened airways.
Key heat safety tips for pet owners:
* Avoid walking pets during the hottest part of the day.
* Never leave animals in parked vehicles, even for a short time.
* Monitor pets closely for signs of heat stress, such as heavy panting, drooling or weakness.
* Provide fans or cooling mats indoors, especially in homes without air conditioning.
