As of today, July 21, 2025, Missouri is experiencing a dangerous and prolonged heatwave expected to last through at least Thursday, July 24. An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for much of the state, particularly the central, east central, south central, southwest, and west central portions.
High temperatures and humidity poses a serious risk to dogs, cats and other household animals.
Limiting outdoor activity during peak heat hours, ensuring pets have access to fresh water and shade, and keeping them indoors as much as possible.
Brachycephalic breeds like bulldogs and pugs are especially susceptible to overheating due to their shortened airways.
Key heat safety tips for pet owners:
* Avoid walking pets during the hottest part of the day.
* Never leave animals in parked vehicles, even for a short time.
* Monitor pets closely for signs of heat stress, such as heavy panting, drooling or weakness.
* Provide fans or cooling mats indoors, especially in homes without air conditioning.
